Not much money in the council race
From the Richmond City Hall post for examiner.com, Isaac Graves looks into the reported donations so far in the race for the City Council 7th District seat:
The most recent reports on the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) website shows that the six way race for the open city council seat in the 7th district, is so far attracting scant dollars, and attention. Unlike the last council election where former incumbent Councilwoman Delores Mc Quinn garnered thousands in corporate donations in her successful re-election bid, the current race to succeed her is largely based on personal contact and candidate stamina, not money.
Cynthia Newbille has the most at $3,100. Clarence Kenney has $350. Deanna Lewis, Robin Robinson, Garry Powell and Ronald Bond have reported no donations.
Note to candidates: since money is tight, you might want to ask your volunteers to NOT place campaign signs in the public right-of-way or on public property (parks, traffic islands & roundabouts, sidewalks, utility poles, city fences, tree wells, etc.)
You’ll save yourself some hard-won campaign dollars/signs if you can get this across to your volunteers.
Be forewarned: I and others will continue to remove illegally placed campaign signs, regardless of the candidate to which they are assigned.
Simply follow the city’s ordinance about for sign placement. Since you’re running for office, it’s only natural that you would want to be a law-abiding candidate, right? Basically, stick with PRIVATE PROPERTY and you’re ok.
“…. the current race to succeed her is largely based on personal contact and candidate stamina, not money”. I like that statement Mr. Graves.
The “filing date” may also be a factor in the donation amounts seeing that the period is July through August. Three of the candidates, including myself, did not get on the ballot until late August. Mr. Kenney and Newbill were in the race during that filing period.
