Deeds campaign event at Peter Paul

Anne Holton, Mayor Dwight Jones, “and elected officials from Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield” will be part of event as what is being called “The Educational Opportunity Tour” for gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds on Tuesday, October 20, from 4:30-5:45PM at the Peter Paul Development Center (1708 North 22nd Street).
I’m there.
I’ve taken a recent tour of Deeds’ legislative record for educational opportunity and his votes against charter schools are as disappointing as his campaign performance thus far. When and if Bellevue School is surplused by the City, I hope it will become our charter middle school. If it does, it’ll be no thanks to Deeds and the rest on this traveling opportunity show.
I promise not to vote for any 7th District candidates who show up for this farce. Please report back on those who do.
I’m unsold on charter schools. In an environment like Richmond where our public schools are both challenged AND making great progress, it seems like anything that takes momentum and resources away from the neighborhood schools would be at the expense of the system. The neighborhood schools need the financial investment, community support, and the economic and racial diversity of the student body that come with full community participation.
On the flip side, RPS already has a number of schools of choice, including the nationally recognized Open and Community high schools. The Franklin Military Academy has a great record, and just this year began accepting 6th grade student towards having a full middle school program. There is also the middle school and high school IB program.
