Next steps for the Union Hill O&H District

The Union Hill Historic District Initiative blog has an update on the move towards the Union Hill O&H District. On Monday November 16, 2009, City Planners from the Department of Historic Preservation will make a presentation to the Planning Commission about Union Hill and it’s significance as a National Historic District.
TAGGED: Union Hill
what’s the best way for the community to show its support for this thing?
Come to the meeting on November 16 and say you support Union Hill O&H – and pick a planner and send her or him a letter.
Bullwinkle, Union Hill folks that would like to express their opinion regarding the proposed Historic District can attend the Planning Commission’s Public Hearing on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.
The hearing will be part of the Commission’s regular meeting which begins at 1:30pm in the 5th Floor Conference Room at City Hall.
It would also be most helpful to explain the significance of this designation for a neighborhood like ours to our city council candidates. The opponents of this district LOVE to scare our seniors with false rhetoric that hints at nothing short of race-baiting. They use the seniors and the poor among us as just another tool in their effort to stop this from happening. That’s beneath our neighborhood and I hope will stop immediately.
We need to tell the amazing story that is Union Hill and make sure it’s preserved for generations to come. We have always been an integrated, inclusive community even in the 1830s when free blacks and immigrants first populated our “blocks” TOGETHER. We now have the chance to be the first working class neighborhood to receive this designation in all of Richmond!
There’s a reason why Cedar Street Baptist Church, the largest African American congregation in Union Hill, has enthusiastically endorsed the Old and Historic District. Tell me, Buddy, do you think Cedar Street has joined forces with David Johannes and the Civic Association to drive out old or poor people from the neighborhood? No. We know this district is for the good of the community and hope you will work with us toward its establishment.
