Securing access to healthy food in Union Hill
The next meeting of the Union Hill Civic Association, dubbed The Food Meeting, will tackle “Securing Access to Healthy Food in Union Hill”. Guests include The Family Market and Tricycle Gardens. The meeting will be held Wednesday, November 18th at 7PM at the Church Hill House (2400 Burton Street).
A recent email from UHCA president Matt Conrad says that:
Access to nutritious, affordable, and (preferably) locally sourced foods is one of the keys to a healthy community. For the residents of Church Hill House and many of our neighbors in Union Hill, the Family Market on Jefferson Avenue is the closest source for day-to-day nutritional needs. Mahmood “Moose” Mohammad, the owner of the Family Market, has generously agreed to visit with our association to discuss ways that he can better meet those needs, based on our suggestions. Additional guests will be announced soon. Please plan to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the future health of our neighborhood. This is also an important opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the seniors living in Church Hill House and to work toward meeting their needs as members of our community.
We will also receive an update on the progress of our Venable Street efforts, the neighborhood watch, and Union Hill’s Old and Historic District designation.
*****Mark your calendars now for Union Hill’s Third Annual Progressive Dessert Friday, December 18th****
That was one of the best meetings we’ve ever had. Moose was gracious and really listened to everyone’s ideas and food requests. He’s sincerly trying to serve everyone in this community.
Lisa T shared some exciting news about an urban farm that is in the works for Church Hill.
Best of all, the residents and staff at Church Hill House were welcoming and most hospitable. It was a really terrific gathering of the folks in Union Hill who are working to make our neighborhood even more wonderful.
The purpose of this meeting was to find ways to better meet the nutritional needs of seniors living in Church Hill House and for everyone living in the neighborhood. Many residents do not have access to private transportation and find the bus system insufficient for reaching the Market or other grocery stores. Attendees spoke loud and clear about the need for fresh fruits and vegetables within walking distance and Moose heard them loud and clear.
He plans to renovate his store to provide room for fresh produce, consider allowing vegetable stands to be set up during certain days of the week outside of his store, AND is considering a food delivery service to shut-ins throughout Union Hill and beyond.
Last night was incredible in that we started to find local, practical solutions to the needs of the neighbors we care for.
