In November 1909, President William Howard Taft visited Richmond and St.John’s (pictured above with Governor Swanson of Virginia [right], and to the left John Satterfield [Board of Alderman] and John Bliley of the Common Council [with flower]).
Photo from Fifty Years in Richmond, published in 1948 by the Valentine Museum (though the book is “copyright 1948 Miller & Rhodes, Inc”).
And to commemorate this auspicious occassion, the Reinassance Bakery is displaying GUMMY TAFT, a life sized replica of the rotund president made out of the same material as gummy bears. At the end of the month, they will auction it off on ebay, with all proceeds going to local charities.
The only president to also be on the Supreme Court after being president.
