I have always loved the house pictured with this article. She sits like a queen overlooking the 600 Block of North 22nd Street. Every once in awhile I see some activity there and I get hopeful she will be restored, but nothing ever seems to come of it.
Preserve or Push Out (STYLE 11/24/09)
Let’s see, 20 properties owned by a church, rented to seniors…why would those seniors be forced out of a community? The owner of a property is responsible for upkeep, maintenance, changes… Why in the world would any church put those expenses on their tenants to the point the tenants would be forced to leave the neighborhood?
The story says that Melvin Williams & Temple of Judah “owns 20 properties in Union Hill, properties rented by seniors”. It turns out that they own more vacant lots than anything else, and maybe 5 properties rented to seniors. The story isn’t as heartwarming when it’s “owner of vacant, blighted property fights against community preservation”, eh?
A little digging turns up that, under various names, Williams or TOJ own the following:
3508 East Clay is for sale I think for $25,000. They also suck at cutting grass. During the summer months these lots turn into jungles.
Great research John. It is amazing how the media won’t check facts or sources anymnore.
Well 2242 Venable probably won’t be vacant for long and most likely won’t be rented to seniors since it’s an old gas station and, from looking at building permits, being currently renovated for ‘retail.’ That’s the renovation that just put up a large section of 6′ tall chain link fence topped by 3 strands of barbed wire with a wide gate that opens onto an old brick sidewalk…and the day before Thanksgiving a ‘gravel’ driveway which looks to include as many broken bricks as large pieces of stone.
#6- Excellent work, John! Channel 6 invested zero effort on that story.
