Union Hill Old and Historic District passes 8-1
11/23/2009 8:35 PM by John M
City Council tonight approved Ord.No.2009-203 which adds Union Hill to the city’s roster of Old and Historic Districts. The vote was 8-1 in favor, with Jewell the only vote against.
Wow. Is there a date set that the new designation will go into effect?
It’s effective as of council’s vote. Which means now.
As of tonight, Union Hill is officially Richmond’s newest City Old & Historic District. We are proud of the honor and protection City Council has given our historic neighborhood and we are most grateful to 7th District City Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille for her support, in keeping with the sincere campaign pledge she made regarding the importance of preservation as part of her vision for the East End.
This designation is an honor that comes with responsibility. In the coming weeks, the Union Hill Civic Association will redouble efforts to educate neighbors and assist them with the processes necessary for preservation. Tonight, however, we are simply appreciative of our Councilwoman and our supporters throughout Richmond.
We are also appreciative of our neighborhood partners: Cedar Street Baptist Church of God, the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods, Historic Richmond Foundation, New Visions Civic League, the Church Hill Association, Better Housing Coalition, Elder Homes, the Family Supermarket, Alamo BBQ, Antione Green of the Richmond Crusade for Voters, Southside Community Development, and each of you who took the time to make phone calls, send emails, and speak up for Union Hill at public hearings.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve asked you to send so many emails. Please take a moment to send just one more now to thank City Council for their support of Union Hill. After that, the work begins.
