Sorry, but I’m not interested in supporting Glenn Beck or anything his supporters are doing…If you’ve got political beliefs and like Fox non-news, please don’t use it to advertise your business. I find this a total turn-off. I’m really sorry, I’ve supported this business in the past but this is something I can’t support.
Hmmm, I’d actually prefer not to support a business that sponsors such a group. But that’s just me. Gotta love the irony of a florist that sponsors a group denying climate change.
“This is a non-political movement.”
Riiight. Spearheaded by that apolitical community organizer Glenn Beck.
Sorry, but I too won’t support a business that promotes his sideshow.
I just knew that the party of “tolerance and diversity” would scream bloody murder when they saw that. What a shame. I’ll START shopping there, but this may have been a mistake for your business, you’re surrounded by people who DESPISE any of those values or principles. 30 years ago we would have called them communists,…..but I guess “churchhillians” is as good a term as any to call them now. If I were you, I’d arm myself… they don’t tolerate anybody who doesn’t walk in lock step with their “ideas”. Good Luck.
I’ve been called a lot of things but never a communist. I have two words for you, Looney Toons.
Hell hath no fury — and hate hath no competitor — like a tolerant, open-minded, progressive, scorned. The presence of an entrepreneur in Church Hill ought to speak for itself: someone who is trying to make life better in a community that many suburbanites and Fan-ites wouldn’t deign to touch. But it’s not enough to make an investment of one’s life and finances — one is also required to engage in leftist groupthink.
Try this: it is perfectly permissible for a business to espouse a set of principles, be they political, social, eligious, whatever. So long as it does not actually violate the law, he has that right. Equally so, though, do customers have a right to reject that business because of those principles. No harm, no foul. I once changed eye doctors because the business aggressively advertised a political point of view with which I disagreed.
Whether we agree with Carolyn’s political views or not, our community should still support her business.
And my dentist is pushing his luck. Did you ever get a political lecture when somebody’s hands were in your mouth?
That is so true. They talk about diversity, but to them, diversity is only skin deep. You better support a government solution to EVERY problem, or else you’re just ingnorant. Just listen to the DENIERS of climate-gate . . . or the people who buy Obama’s story about creating jobs in congressional districts that don’t even exist. Well, at least he ended Bush’s idiotic wars! I say a business has a right to any political beliefs they choose, and free markets are making more and more sense to me as government continues to grow without any brakes.
Do they promote this in their shop or was this just an obscure ad. CH Herbs has been a pioneer business in this neighborhood. I’d hate to see this hurt their business. Don’t they know business and politics don’t mix?
“Screaming bloody murder? Fury? Leftist groupthink.” Complete hyperbole, which is (no coincidence) what Glen Beck trades in. That I choose not to support a business that so publicly supports a political action group whose agenda I strongly oppose, is a legitimate and pragmatic choice. And by the way, I can get behind the 12 values, just not the fear driven agenda to which they are linked.
As a person who runs my own business, I figure that people who don’t appreciate my point of view – or way, in general – can find another agent. I suppose that Glenn Beck supporters, (to sum folks up in three words) might fall into that category, and that’s cool. Or, we may see eye to eye on real estate, and not have to agree on everything to work together.
Personally, I kind of like being around people who are not carbon copies of myself, but I do understand that not everybody feels that way.
There’s a world of people out there who are neither Glen Beck supporters nor “carbon copies of myself.” To imply that those who won’t willingly support Beck only wish to be around people that are clones of themselves is misleading.
I’m so glad that the health care debate, the “arctic ice is disappearing” debate, and the economic “bail out” debate, have not be driven by any fear-mongering. I’m also glad that we can agree that anyone who opposed the constant, never ending growth of the power and scope of government is a fear mongerer. Since we agree on those things, couldn’t we just call ourselves carbon copies of one another?
RE #14 – Of course, people can support whomever and whatever they choose. Just saying that this kind of thing can apply across a broader line of thinking, rather than a more narrow one.
Some random notes:
This is wrong.
I didn’t appreciate being called a communist by my religious right Amway card-carrying brother through the Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton years, or being labeled unpatriotic for opposing the Bush Jr. invasion of Iraq and a socialist for supporting health care reform. I don’t care for Glenn Beck, and his predecessors, Rush and Coulter. I eat French fries and prefer French wine purchased from local shops.
I have a hard time with neighbors picking on small local businesses. One of the few things we have left and that is struggling to stay alive is the American small business and the possibility and ability to work for oneself.
I don’t watch Fox or CNN –it is all pre-chewed news dropped into our gullets. They paint the ugly pictures they want us to see, steer us into one of the corporate teams, and revel in our bickering.
My grandmother would say that “the devil is kicking up his heels” on this thread. It is not right to try and hurt a neighbor.
This is a small town and often people will know our political views, especially from those that are active in the community like Carolyn. Do we want to create an atmosphere of fear –fear of retribution –for exercising our right of Freedom of speech?
Couple more notes: Carolyn didn’t hesitate to donate to our school raffle when asked and I still love my brother and wish him great success.
Boycott the big guys –the parties are corporate owned and we’re next.
There’s no debate concerning the disappearance of Arctic ice. There’s hard evidence that that’s happening. The debate concerns its cause, and that debate, and indeed others concerning health care and the economy are muddied by shrill voices, whether they occur on the left or the right.
The point remains, if a business is openly promoting a political organization by directly linking to that organization in their ads, no one should be surprised if people who don’t support that agenda choose not to do business with that company. It doesn’t mean those people are closed-minded, or opposed to diversity, or indeed carbon copies of anything.
What I don’t understand is why this merchant gets a blurb about a sale. Should Pets at Play or the Patrick Henry Inn also be mentioned when they have a sale? If so, the Patrick Henry is having its usual $3 hamburger lunch and dinner today (and every Tuesday).
Hey Michael – I’ll gladly promote any sale, open house, special event, opening, re-opening, re-grand opening etc that a local business or organization is having, if I know about it.
Know anyone at Patrick Henry? Pass’em my email murden@gmail.com and tell’em to keep me up on what they would like to share out.
To encourage diversity, an alternate take on Glen Beck.

#18 You need to spend some time with the satellite photos of the Arctis over the last two summers. Variation is real. Imminent disappearance is what is disputed. We know the approximate shorlines and ice packs with Erik the Red led the almost 500-year Norse settlement of Greenland during the Medieval Climate Optimum. This is not merely science, it is hard, documented history. Anyone who knows history knows that the Little Ice Age ended about 1850 and that the climate has been — MORE or LESS — warming ever since. But beyond that, the panaceas being bandied about by those who would hide, obscure, or deny the actual data are without sanity. To call historians and climatologists who are skeptical by the term “deniers” — well that’s a pretty loaded rhetorical bombshell. And when the President spends the first six months of the year talking about the 46 million Americans without health care and the second six months of the year talking about the 30 million Americans without health care, then I want to keep talking so that by June of 2010 we’ll be down to 15 million without health care — just by talking about it. “Fear” and “shrill” are very much in the eye of the beholder. After growing up in a very left leaning household, my biggest fear is that government grows bigger and bigger and bigger each year, and there’s always yet another crisis that “requires” the intervention of our brilliant members of Congress — If it’s not hearings about baseball, it’s a new set of laws governing college football. Is there no sphere of human endeavor that they wouldn’t stick their noses into. I have to work for a living, so I don’t watch this Glenn Beck guy. I can’t stand the likes of Bill O’Riley or Rush Blowhard. But, sadly, I am mesmerized when I read the earmarks that are inserted into the Virginia and federal budgets, and while I oppose the death penalty, I think bribing, crooked politicians ought to be taken out and shot — and their seats filled by citizens chosen at random.
maybe this is a way to eliminate customers, rather than potential customers choosing to shop there or not. no store owners wants people of opposite views shopping at their stores, right?
19 comments and counting. Touched a nerve, eh? Methinks thou dost protest too much. Too funny…
I just clicked on the red links…it is a little over the top. I thought it was an ad for Christmas centerpieces and couldn’t understand how politics had entered the thread. It is a political ad.
What about the ice cream store which the owner is GOD?
I don’t think God is the problem. It is his followers that I fear.
@27 Aren’t the secular climate people shouting down others with the same violence of an End Times preacher on this very comment thread?
Neighbor #28, I will let eds (#26) elaborate. Short answer, someone approached the ice cream store about supporting the holiday ball this past weekend, and the person asked for the owner of the ice cream store only to be told that the owner was God. I heard the story straight from eds.
Bill Conkle, I rather like your comment #27, thanks.
christo, who was “screaming bloody murder”? The comments that preceded yours did nothing of the sort (ie: “I’m not interested in supporting Glenn Beck,” “I prefer not to support..”). They all seem like tempered responses, saying that they aren’t interested in supporting a business that publicly allies itself with a certain political movement. YOU’RE the one who brought in the hatespeak (DESPISE!!! COMMUNIST!!! Guns!!!) Perfectly illustrating how the conservative establishment has mastered the technique of name-calling, while insisting that they’re the ones being persecuted…
#22 Not that your anecdote about Erik the Red isn’t compelling, but I put more stock in the conclusions drawn by NASA, NOAA, and virtually every other scientific organization in the world–namely that global warming is real, and that man-made greenhouse gases play a significant role in contributing to it. You bemoan increased government intervention in our lives, but with profit trumping ethics, as it does, and without further legislation to regulate emissions and waste, the world will become increasingly toxic.
Um, no. She had McDonnell signs in her windows during election season. I canceled an order I had the very next day after I saw that. I will never support her business, in fact, I personally hope her business fails and someone else gets the building. I don’t care what kind of “liberal commie” that makes me look like to you freaks and birthers and teabaggers.
Not long ago it was customary to keep your political persuasion to yourself. It was considered private. You can see, from the above, that maybe that’s a good idea! The business owner has been all but crucified and the customers have demonstrated their intolerance of differing views. I thought we were bigger then that.
that is the spirit jaime, now the president of dominion power is a friend of the newly elected gov mcdonnell, even gave him some money for the election. i am guessing that come monday you will gladly have your electric power account turned off.
James, Dominion didn’t run ads for McDonnell, nor did they set up a special “vote for Bob and we’ll give you a discount” deal for people of a certain political persuasion. Don’t be so naive and small minded and just flat out ignorant here; your comparison is pathetic at best.
Laura, you’re right. If she didn’t display that sign, I never would have known and she would have made the money I then demanded she give back. Maybe she should be a businesswoman first, teabagger/birther second.
I’m probably too young to have a legitimate perspective, but I don’t remember a time when folks were so polarized… so blinded by intolerance.
It truly saddens me. Have things been like this before?
Divided we fall.
jaime, if you were half smart you would have mentioned 9-12 richmond 4 times and gotten 40% off. how do you tell a repub tulip from a democat tulip? ask jaime! jaime when you go to the grocery do you question the produce, or do you squeeze it?
Having exposed taint in another post, I feel I should leave the definition of tea bagger to someone else. thanks.
Oh come on Bill, you did a great job with the definition of taint, I think you’re on a roll now! Try tea baggers, and birthers while you’re at it, please!
#36 Caroline, I think you’ll find that there have been nutty right wingers out there in the past, too. Try the McCarthy era in the 1950s, HUAC (House Unamerican Activities Committee) in Congress having hearings with Sen. McCarthy trying to ‘out’ supposed commies in all areas of gov’t and elsewhere, black listing supposed commies for employment particularly in Hollywood….different groups now but just as nutty, in my opinion.
crd,
If you honestly think I was referring to only one end of the political spectrum when I say that it saddens me that we are so polarized, than you have proven my point.
…So many derogatory terms being used- commies, libtards, teabaggers, nutty right wingers, etc. Does this method of marginalizing those with differing viewpoints make you feel superior to your neighbors? Maybe there should be less time spent pigeonholing your neighbors & more time focusing on improving your relationships and learning from one another. I’m embarrassed for all of you.
Wow! That was more fun than our roundabout! Kool-aid comes in several flavors, but it seems to be the beverage of choice in CH.
Thank you #41.
But thank goodness everyone of every political stripe has the scientific, historical, and philisophical proof that they are right and the other side is wrong. Once again, tolerance rules the day.
