“The majority of calls […] involve people firing guns in the air”

The Richmond Police Department wil be more than doubling the number of officers on the streets for New Year’s Eve. The officers and detectives will be divided among the Department’s four precincts based on the analysis of previous years’ data on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day incidents.
“The majority of calls for New Year’s involve people firing guns in the air, especially at the midnight hour,” Horn said. “For safety’s sake, we want to remind people that reckless handling of firearms endangers everyone. Bottom line: It is illegal to fire a weapon in the city limits.”
TAGGED: New Year's Eve
I didn’t know it was illegal to fire a gun within city limits… so much for that being followed. I wonder if I’ll be ducking tomorrow night? It sure is a far cry from 1994-1995 when it sounded like we were at war. All that was missing was heavy artillery.
And remember the year that the New Years Eve shoot out was used to cover the murder of a drug informer in South Richmond?
Anyway, I hope Mark Holberg is out there again this year to catch it all one tape.
I didn’t know what gunfire sounded like until I moved here. On 7/04/06, I kept looking out of the window for the fireworks. Now I stay away from the windows! I hope you will too!!
Lots of happiness and good luck to all my neighbors in 2010. Happy New Year!
homies…out after dark…they’ll be smooth.
Still quiet at 11:22!
It was quiet until the countdown just before 12 with a few lonely shots. Then at 12 there were a few more here and there. I didn’t hear anymore after about 12:40. It almost sounded like I was living in the suburbs!
The last shot I heard was about 12:30 or so which is a lot better than when I moved up here in 2005 when it sounded like a war zone.
South Side was eerily quiet this year. Almost like someone sent out a memo.
Over in Fairmount we had a string of 10 shots at 3am, which repeated at 3:30, then 4.

Cadeho,
Where in church hill do u live b/c it didn’t sound like the suburbs where I live.
I’ve lived in three different houses in church hill, and it always sounds like a war zone. I live across from the park, and heard gun-shot about two blocks away for about 1/2 hour. There was a lot of it, and I’ve brought in the new year w/ friends out by CCV before and never heard any gun-fire.
However, I just kept working on my computer. It’s my observation that church hill is just that way, and it’ll never change.
I think it makes church hill interesting, the possiblility of a little danger :).
