The 2nd Annual Union Hill Brunswick Stew Feast set for Sunday
The Second Annual Union Hill Brunswick Stew Feast is this Sunday, Jan.3 beginning at 1PM. All are invited to the green space at the intersection of 23rd and Jessamine Streets. Bring a side dish if you’d like and well wishes for a Happy New Year to share for sure.
The stew will contain chicken, not squirrel:
As you may have heard, we here in Union Hill love our history. But we’ve decided to put aside tradition for one day and skip the historically accurate, four-legged ingredient commonly found in Jefferson Park and in Brunswick Stews of yore. Since the Commission of Stew Review has graciously given us a special dispensation on the ingredients, we’d like to invite you, your friends and even pets to join us for some delicious (almost old-fashioned) stew and a little corn hole tournament, to boot! For you traditionalists, we’ll have some black-eyed peas available, as well. We hope you will join us and celebrate the coming year with your neighbors in Union Hill.

What’s a corn hole tournament?

We may not be doing the tournament, but will still have the game:
“Cornhole a.k.a “tailgate toss,” “bean bag toss,” “baggo,” or “bags” is a lawn game in which players take turns pitching cornhole bags—cotton duck bags filled with feed corn—at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A corn bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a player reaches the score of 21.”
A bunch of Union Hillers just passed out several hundred fliers around the neighborhood (and beyond) for tomorrow’s Brunswick Stew Feast. If you got one, spread the word. All are welcome and encouraged to join us for hot food and fellowship! There will be vegetarian options available, as well.

Thanks to everyone who worked to make this event happen. It was real nice to walk a few blocks and be served some wonderful stew (and black eyed peas and greens) as well as have some great conversations with neighbors. Events like this make Union Hill a great place to live and play.
Ditto
It didn’t take much to make it happen, just a small group working together. Honestly, while we do the stew only once a year, things like this could happen on a regular basis. I encourage everyone to gather your own group, brainstorm, and give out warm desserts on one of these cold days, or have a “pig pickin'”, or an outdoor spaghetti luncheon, etc… the more we’re out doing things together, the more our neighborhood because what we want it to be… a community.
Greens! Boy, I wish I had made it to this event. Love some stew too. Union Hill has got a cool crowd.
Proof that no squirrels were harmed in the making of the stew can be viewed at: http://www.vimeo.com/8566882
It should be mentioned that this year’s Brunswick Stew Feast was made possible by the support of the Family Market, located at the corner of 24th Street and Jefferson Avenue in Union Hill.
