Contact Chris Whiting at (804)236-4964 or chris.whiting@chatrichmond.org for more information.
is this like high on the hog?
This is nothing like High on the Hog.
Man is just another animal and he does not have dominion to exploit non-human animals given to him by God, CHAT should move the discussion to the religious aspects of helping to feed the homeless, the deleterious effects consuming non-human animal flesh on mans health, as well as its effect on the environment. CHAT should consider the continued suffering of not only the non-human animals, but the torturing of those people who are involved in the production of livestock. Anyone who must slaughter the number of animals that are required to fulfill the blood lust of the meat industry surely must go through a dehumanizing experience.
The degradation of the environment is not in Gods plan. God has given us life and the duty to be the stewards to the Earth, this is not being accomplished by current agricultural practices that deplete top soil, pollute the water, and the deforestation of lands to make way for grazing or growing of crops (40 per cent of which will be consumed by livestock). It is a form of gluttony to continue to eat meat while people are starving for basic foods being consumed by livestock. Gluttony is not simply eating large quantities of food. It is eating more than one needs. That is, it is eating when not necessary. What is so offensive to God when gluttony involves meat is that animals have to be killed needlessly simply to satisfy peoples’ gastronomic cravings. It is this unnecessary killing that provokes divine displeasure. One only wonders what God thinks about great quantities of meat being consumed in vegetable rich countries where meat is no longer necessary. Gluttons…reflect an egocentric vice to please self without regard for how it might affect others in the community of creation.

@ Annoyed,
Oye vey! it sounds like you’re just trying to pick a fight w/ CHAT, using your personal food politics as a battering ram.
Do you even know what they’re about and how much good beyond measure they do for this community?
For the record, i’m a vegetarian, a secular humanist. I don’t believe in god.
But, I do believe in CHAT. And I’m so-OK with their faith-based mission.
I love what CHAT does and what it stands for in this community. And if they want to host a pig pickin’ and invite the entire community to join them in food and fellowship, by all means let’s celebrate that, and leave the discussion about global food politics for another day.
With the forecast of snow for this weekend will the pig pickin’ still be going on?
Remember, for the chicken, a bacon and egg sandwich it’s all in a days work, for the hog, it’s a lifetime commitment.
It’s not the consumption of meat that is the sin, it’s the manner in which the animals are killed.
And I wouldn’t bring God into this. If you read your Bible, it seems they are sacrificing a lamb or whatnot on every other page.
Postponed due to the anticipated snow.
Thanks…. will be checking back when they are having the event.
@annoyed and others who, speaking of hogs, seem to be pretty high on one. As Elaine asked – do you even know what CHAT is and does for Churchill? OR how, when and why they were founded? And that the founder is quite involved in the church? In any event – perhaps you should take both tvnewsbadge’s and elaine’s advice and leave the politics and G*d out of it. Judge lest ye be judged – oh, and be thankful people are doing something for the neighborhood.
