Boom?
02/01/2010 9:12 AM by John M
We’ve gotten reports from Church Hill to Woodville of 3 loud booms shortly after midnight. Anybody got any info?
The RTD is reporting that three manhole covers blew on the 300 block of East Franklin but puts at about 2AM.
We heard it around midnight. We live near 25th and Grace, and it sounded quite loud.
I heard it twice on 32nd and Broad at 12:26am. It sounded like small explosions out in Shockoe Valley where the CSX runs.
RTD is reporting it was a blown transformer.

Citizen Tom, your link is to a story about blown manhole covers, at 2 a.m., in the 300 block of West Franklin Street. Doesn’t sound like the same thing…?
It was about 12:30… 12:27 to be exact. It sounded like thunder and as if it came from the west. I texted a friend at VCU who didn’t hear anything. I was baffled until I saw that article but their time is off… if that is what it was.
I heard it, too (corner of 27th and Leigh)! I knew it couldn’t be thunder because we just got a foot of snow, meaning the dew point/humidity was very low but had no other ideas. So blown manhole covers eh? Neat.
Oh yeah, it was around 12:30am because I wasn’t up at 2am.
Remember those kids who terrorized Ginter Park a couple of years ago with dry ice bombs?
It was manhole covers blowing up due to an electrical transformer malfuction. No one was hurt.
Not about the boom, but did anyone else hear the three long horn like noises around 1 am on Feb 3 (Night of Feb 2).
It was a neopagan holiday, but if that what it was they were an hour off…
I heard four loud booms last night, midnight-ish time frame…anyone else?
It woke us/the dogs up last night also. There was 4 booms. I actually caught one visually on my security camera- it was someone shooting off fireworks. It was north west towards the bottom. Definitely not a bottom rocket, I could see it above the tree line and above the next door building.
Yes we did also. Timeframe was actually 1:00-1:20. I thought I saw fire trucks heading east on Marshall. Anyone else?
The fireworks were set off in the 300 block of 29th street. We’ve found the shells and took pictures. When the Police arrived the two grown man in their fifties ran cowardly inside and shut the lights off. Nothing new, they’ve done this to us on Memorial Day weekend already on a smaller scale.
1:20 am was the time. I am not a fan of fireworks period but shooting them off at that time of night is beyond rude. I’m 3 blocks away and my entire house woke up. Did RPD indicate that there was anything they could do to address the issue, since you know who it was and where they live??
The residents of 309 and 311 N 29th Street were responsible for shooting off fireworks at 1:00am last night and the police were called. The police were called (by several neighbors) and RPD paid them a visit.
They just received a warning and we’re not cited but several neighbors are in the process of pursuing additional action against them since this was not an isolated incident and they’ve been confronted over this before.
Ridiculous!
The sad part about this irresponsible, rude and alcohol fueled behavior is that all of guilty parties are 60 years old or older! From a kid….it makes sense and could be chalked up to immaturity…from folks in this age bracket, it’s uncalled for and they should be cited.
Dear Neighbors on the 300 Block of 29th Street:
Your asshole (ish) activities at 1:15 AM are unwelcomed, unappreciated, and illegal.
Rude and entitled people have no regard for others so I suspect this will fall on deaf ears. Your “so-called fun” woke our entire family up including my 6 month old grandbaby who my daughter could not get to sleep for 2 hours, sent my dog into a frenzy and scared many people in the surrounding neighborhood. There were so many calls coming into the police dispatch that some calls were not answered for quite a while. If there was a real emergency or crisis happening at that time and someone couldn’t get through to the police department, I’m certain that you idiots wouldn’t care.
Alcoholism seems to be a theme…maybe you should seek out AA to help with your problem as opposed to disrupting the lives of your neighbors.
Thank you.

So the police know the exact address? I think you should post it here so the next time this happens we will all know where to go to put a stop to it!
I suspect with their mentality, firing off guns to celebrate seems like an acceptable behaviour in an urban environment.
Hi Jean,
The addresses are posted in #16. Hopefully that will put an end to the anti-social behavior. If it happens again, I will visit them along with the police to insist they be charged. A nice fine and some court fees may make it less funny.
I heard it too and figured it was fireworks… they do that around here in Woodville proper. These were distant and not too unsettling for me but I’m sorry for those where it was… I hate unexpected loud booms.
I’m a quiet person and I hate all loud noises, especially when they launch me out of bed at 1am and scare my cats. But there is just a wee bit of over reaction here! Everybody just needs to calm down and relax.
Pick your battles, people
@21..obviously you don’t live next to these idiots and have to deal with their regular fireworks, which is not only disturbing but also illegal. The majority that lives next to these drunken old fools is really quite sick of it and I think it is definitely a battle worth choosing!!!
