Pizza delivery?
02/11/2010 4:30 PM by John M
It’s 2010, shouldn’t we be able to get pizza delivered?
I live in Church Hill and I have called six pizza delivery places and all told me they don’t deliver to my neighborhood. I called the Domino’s at Belvidere near VCU, I called the Pizza Hut on Broad near the Science Museum, I called Channello’s in the east end and on the Boulevard, I called Assante’s and I called Papa John’s on Main near VCU.
According to their websites, Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s don’t deliver to my neighborhood.
Has anyone had better luck?
[…] I know about Bottom’s Up and don’t care to pay their exorbitant prices when most other pizza restaurants charge less for the same pie.
We were able to get delivery from Valentino’s on Grace Street to a school the other day. I dunno if they’ll deliver to a house or apartment.
Valentino’s as John said. Bubbling on East Main, They are on point and the Falafal’s are way good from Bubbling (the Hooka place). Domino’s may deliver depends on who answers the phone and where in the Hill you live.
Extreme Pizza told me they deliver if VCU is not in session. Although they never have delivered to me at 36th and Broad, despite what the dude said when I picked up my pie.
Chanello’s and Papa Johns (both in the (East End) laughed when I asked “why not deliver I am less than 5 miles.”
It ain’t pizza (but the Chinese invented spaghetti so…) Wan Jin Lou also called Neighborhood Chinese at 649-9888 are the best people and they deliver all over the Hills.
Third on Valentino’s
Tarrantino’s will also deliver, and their pizza is great.
I just walk down to Sette. I love wood-fired brick oven pizza!
Try Chanello’s on Laburnum again (the east end). I live in Fulton and they have always delivered to me. In fact, they are the only place that will deliver to us. Like you said, Papa John’s in the east end laughed at us when we called. THey said they didn’t deliver to our side of the street when we told them our house #.
It’s annoying because I used to live in some really sketch parts of the fan before buying my house here and everything would deliver at all hours.
Where in the Hill do you live? Assante’s delivers to my house weekly. The food is always hot and good.
tarrants on broad also delivers. excellent
Bubbling, get the Bubbling Special.
Bottoms Up delivers to the hill! I’m eating a slice now. mmmmm.
oh, i missed that last bit at the top about Bottoms Up…i beg to differ, it is NOT the “same pie” as the others. IMO, Bottoms Up is WAY better and worth every dollar.
Bottom’s Up has been delivering to us in Fulton Hill for ten years (about 95% of the time) Twice, we were told they don’t deliver to Fulton…so , if they come up here, you;d think they’d come over there 😉
Picolla’s will deliver. Good NY style pizza and cheesesteaks!
We’ve gotten delivery from Tarrnt’s. Not sure what their delivery area includes. Also, Bubblings is really good if you are drunk. They also have a good meatball sammy.
Tarrant’s not Tarrnt’s sorry
There was a pizza place way up on 25th Street at some point in the last year or so – I can’t think of the name of it, anyone else know the name, and if it’s still there?
I know someone who said the pizza was good, again, it was awhile ago…and he picked it up, didn’t get delivery so I don’t even know if they deliver.
And lastly, there’s a pizza place at 18th and East Main, SW corner I think, that I’ve heard is excellent. No delivery but supposedly really good pies…
we also use Tarrantino’s for delivery – good pizza!
Isn’t anyone getting it? If the pizza places know you, they will deliver. Its like piece of mind. I know the guy at Bottoms up and they deliver to me all the time on 32nd.
DaVinci’s should deliver to most blocks, but if they don’t its an easy pick-up on 25th just past Venable
Ok, I am at a loss – where is Tarrantino’s? I am ALWAYS on the lookout for a great pie. As for DaVinici’s; it is in my back yard but I personally would not give their pizza a favorable review.
Tarrantino’s is also known as Tarrants. It used to be a separate part of Tarrants in the back, but now the kitchen has been moved there. Tarrants is on the web, and they are located at 1 West Broad, corner of Foushee.
Thanks, I had no idea you guys were talking about the same place – I was hoping to find a new haunt!
I eat Davinci’s all the time and love it. It’s cheap $10 NY pizza, obviously no $35 pizza from Bottom’s Up.
DaVinci’s was the name I couldn’t think of last night (in #16). Good to know it’s still there up on 25th St.
Caroline #23, your description of it being NY pizza explains why my friend liked it, now I want to try it too!
DaVinci’s Pizza is amazing. The Philly Chicken Cheesesteak Pizza is challenging Mac-n-Cheese a my favorite comfort food.
I can’t reply to every comment so I’ll try to summarize; I wil1 definitely try Valentino’s, DaVinci’s, Sette and Tarrantino’s (Tarrants).
Bottom’s Up pizza is overrated and over-priced in my opinion. However, I’m not hating on anyone who likes their pizza!
Every pizza place I mentioned that I called said they would not deliver to my neighborhood; not one of them asked where on the Hill I live; I live near Jefferson and 21st. I know Assante’s; I was one of their first customers but they didn’t care when I called. 🙁
Thanks to EVERYONE for posting; I got a lot of super helpful feedback! 🙂
@Carolyn – I live right on Jefferson Park and have had pizza delivered from Bottom’s Up, Valentino’s, and Tarrantino’s. Not sure what’s up with that.
Carolyn…have any of the places that you called…ever deliver to your address? Here’s why I ask…I have tenants who live in my building. When I call for delivery, they always deliver to my home. However, when my tenants call, several places tell them they won’t deliver to that address. The tenants told these establishments that they actually do deliver to the address..they insisted that they won’t deliver. When my tenants told me that they tip $2-3 for the delivery. I immediately understood why the restaurants were unwilling to go the THEIR address. I believe some of these places flag phone numbers for “no delivery”.
Bill Conkle #25 – does DaVinci’s deliver?
Carolyn #26 – good luck with pizza delivery in the future! Maybe you should use ChrisF’s address and walk to his place to get your delivered pizza!
Its not that they don’t deliver to Church Hill. Bottoms up doesn’t deliver past the 700 block. Most places draw a similar line.
We charge 2 slices for that service, but blocks of orders can be purchased at a slice discount.
I don’t believe DaVinci’s delivers. to #29
papa’s pizza delivers to church hill area
Valentino’s delivers to the 400 block of N. 31st.
Thanks for all this great information!!! I live next to St. John’s church, and I have gotten Piccola’s to deliver many many times, no problem. Also, if you order from Dominos online, you might have more luck. Def. going to try Tarrants now!
Sorry to say that I just ordered from Piccola’s.
Sorry because they will ruin any attempt I may try at maintaining smaller hips… the hand tossed pizza (white pizza with fresh tomato slices and mushrooms thrown on for fun) was GREAT. Nice on the phone, delivery in 40 minutes. Great delivery guy who gave me an authentic “Ciao” and a smile upon leaving. Highly recommend!
not to sound cynical, but the pizza in central virginia is a joke! on the rare occasions i’m that desperate enough to not make my own, i’m fine with driving to divinci’s on 25th and paying $6 for flour, canned tomato and cheese.
bottom’s up is a overpriced joke. for far less than what they charge one can bake a pizza that tastes twice as good:
flour/yeast – $1
can or box crushed MARZANO tomatoes – $3
can of paste (organic) – $1
garlic/onions – $1
cold pressed olive oil- $1 (a few ounces)
basil/oregano – $1 (FRESH)
~10 oz overpriced buffalo mozzarella – $4
toppings to taste… – $x
*look up a recipe for dough online – most will tell you it’s all about the temperature the water’s at so pay close attention to that. my little trick is to put olive oil/ salt/ spices in the dough.
*sauce:
-mince onion/garlic, sautee on low heat
-heat paste in separate pan on low heat
-combine above(single pan low heat 5 min)
-add MARZANO tomatoes, stir/heat 15 min.
*grate cheese(mozz. w/ romano is nice)
*prep all toppings separately
(examples follow)
-steam chopped mushrooms in wine/basalmic
-sautee garlic/onions/pepper in olive oil
-sautee sausage/veggie burger separately
-pre-grilled whatever (u get the idea)
wasn’t that hard?
NOW:
-pre-heat oven to 400 degrees (best done while prepping your ingredients)
-use a medium pizza stone (get one for half the price of one bottom’s up pie)
-layer your pizza…
+crust atop preheated pizza stone
+sauce you made
+toppings you made
+cheese (ON TOP of toppings works nice)
-bake until cheese/crust golden brown (should take 12-15 minutes)(oven times vary)
-use the $20 you saved on a nice red wine, beer or soda
piccola’s is below average, even if they are run by transplanted italians. the local low calibur appreciation for a decent slice would put them at a 2 of 5 star rating.
After living in Italy, I consider myself a bit of a pizza connoisseur. The only place close to Church Hill with decent pizza is Sette, and that place isn’t even that great. Luckily, there will be a place opening in the Fan/Carytown in a couple weeks that will be very authentic Italian (Napoletana) style pizza. The owner is having an all wood-fired brick oven installed and the menu sounds fantastic. The place is called Stuzzi. Can’t wait to try their food!
James, I heard about Stuzzi but also Aziza’s on Main is putting in a wood fired pizza oven as well. That, along with the fact that Billy is an incredible baker, will ensure the hill has a go to place for a high quality pizza they way they should be cooked…
Not sure when the oven there will be finished but I recently saw an article that showed pictures and it looks like it won’t be terribly far down the road.
