I oppose McDonnell’s recommendation to unfreeze the local composit index thus creating an additional $11 million dollar loss for the Richmond Public Schools. This will mean larger classroom sizes, no more art, band, foreign languages, and athletics. Keep in mind, our kids need a year of foreign languages in middle school for Maggie Walker and an art portfolio for the Governor’s art school.
Whether or not one has children of school age, this is something to fight. If we allow the destruction of urban public education, the devastation will trickle into our neighborhoods and I would imagine more of the working classes will flee the city.
William Smith, Will someone be posting information on the fb page soon? Right now the profile is bare. As soon as it is fleshed out a bit, I’ll suggest it to fb friends.

I went to one of the districts meetings tonight. As it turns out, with the recommended unfreeze, elementary schools would lose funds for band, orchestra, foreign languages, etc. The middle school will keep those programs. But all the same. The cuts would reduce funding for advance placement programs at the high school level. I imagine this would be detrimental for students competing for placement in and scholarships to universities. The cuts will also eliminate high school athletic programs. This is only a partial list of reductions and eliminations.
John, do you know when the Assembly will work on the education budget cuts, in particular the decision on McDonnell’s recommendation to unfreeze the composite index?
