2010 Census kickoff campaign at Franklin Military

There will be a rally and special assembly to kickoff the city of Richmond’s 2010 Census campaign on Monday, March 8, from 10:30AM–11:30AM at Franklin Military Academy (701 North 37th Street). In attendance will be U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dennis Hightower, Mayor Dwight C. Jones, City Council President Kathy Graziano, 7th District City Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille, and RPS Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon.
From the press release:
The city of Richmond’s response rate in the 2000 U.S. Census was 60 percent. Since funding for public education and community service programs are affected by Census data, city and school officials will emphasize why a high response and return rate is critical in “Building a Better Richmond.”
Awesome, Dr. Brandon can stand around and brag about her Lexus in front of parents who can’t afford a car at all. Again.
@1- So does it mean that we should all be equal financially? If Dr. Brandon does what it takes to have the financial ability to purchase a Lexus, why begrudge her for that. Others can have one too if they’re willing to do what it takes. Hey, we should be thankful for all of the opportunities that we have to become financially well-off. It’s the American way!
I don’t have a dog in this hunt but considering that RPS has such an *awful* reputation because of it’s failure to give our children the education necessary for them to have a fighting chance to “do what it takes”, it’s understandable that some will find a display of wealth by those who administer this school system to be questionable.
After all, it IS taxpayer dollars that provided the fat salary that bought that Lexus.
When she’s complaining left & right, 24/7 about budget cuts and all of the sacrifices RPS* has to make, it’s pretty bad form to be yukking it up about her car in front of families below the poverty line.
*Especially since, even with her less-than $2000 pay cut, she’ll STILL make more than what the position paid 2 years ago.
It’s my understanding that the Church Hill Central Civic Association has also made arrangements for a representative from the U.S. Census Bureau to attend their next meeting on March 15th at 7PM at the Robinson Theater.
One has to wonder how much the rally/special assembly itself will cost the city.
