Any witnesses to a cyclist hit&run?
A reader writes in: “My brother was riding his bike on Williamsburg Road and got hit by an SUV which did NOT stop.”
She also says that “My brother – the victim – is not inclined to pursue any kind of attention to the incident; he […] blames himself for it, but I think the incident raises issues that need addressing”, and sent in a description of the incident:
The cyclist was riding west on Williamsburg Road around 6:30PM last Sunday. As he approached the train tracks at Fulton Gas Works (which cross the roadway at an angle at this location) he looked behind him to check for traffic before executing a maneuver familiar to any cyclist, i.e. swerving out into the road so as to cross the tracks at a right angle to prevent catching a tire and crashing. He saw a dark gray SUV in the distance behind him and judged it to be far enough away for him safely to swing out into the left lane so as to cross the tracks without incident.
As he did so, the SUV overtook him, striking the bicycle’s front wheel with the left front bumper. The cyclist was thrown in the air by the impact. His right hip hit the side mirror and his back hit the post at the left edge of the windshield. The cyclist then fell into the road on his right side, sustaining deep contusions and extensive abrasions and cracking his helmet.
The driver of the SUV proceeded away from the scene, leaving the cyclist stunned, unable to breathe, bleeding and in substantial pain, to crawl out of the road to avoid being struck by other vehicles. At this time of day, it was still light outside and it is NOT possible that the driver was unaware that he/she had hit someone with his/her vehicle.
The victim is unaware of any witnesses to the incident and believes that the woman who stopped to help, and called 911, did not actually witness what happened. He has some awareness of multiple cars driving by after the woman stopped. He also mentions a jogger who was in the area at the time though his role and whether he witnessed anything is not known.
After a time, EMT and police arrived on the scene. The victim was only minimally able to speak at the time. He wears a Road ID necklace when training (running or cycling) and had to explain this multiple times to emergency personnel and police. Though they were given this information, at NO TIME did anyone call the victim’s wife, who was expecting him at home in time for dinner at 7:15. In fact, it was the victim himself who finally had to find a phone and call his wife from the hospital, after several hours had passed and it became obvious that she had not been called.
He spent the night in the hospital and was discharged late morning on Monday.
He has not yet been contacted by police to further investigate. The condition of the bicycle is unknown, and it is assumed to be in police possession, though a phone call to Sector 111 police earlier in the week yielded no information and the victim has not heard back from any representative of the Richmond Police.
This is as much as I know at this point. I am hoping that raising the awareness level about this will generate some discussion of bicycle safety and maybe bring out a witness.
so sad. that is a rough stretch of williamsburg road with the turns and the tracks and cars always fly through it so fast!
I am the jogger. First- I’m so glad your brother is doing well. I’ve been thinking about him quite a bit over the last week.
I did not see your brother get hit but did arrive on the scene once your brother got himself off the road. There were two women who saw much more than I (which was still not much from what I recall) that stopped to help your brother and call 911.
If I can be of any assistance please let me know- I’m a Church Hill resident. jsydnor@me.com
this is so sad, i’ve been noticing a certain wave of misfortunate incidents happening all over church hill lately (i.e. fatal traffic crashes, and homicides) and honestly, i may just give up on making this my area of residence at this point…unless something can be done about this. There is an eminent need to restore order in church hill and it is all that impossible to accomplish!
My name is Rochelle Dean and i am a reporter for WRIC TV 8. I am assuming the driver of the suv has not been identified as of yet…I would love to speak to your brother about this accident. Perhaps doing a story could help police get closer to bringing the driver to justice. Please contact me once you receive this email.

Wow. What kind of a coward do you have to be to hit someone like that, and keep going? Utterly disgraceful.
I understand this poor man has had enough fuss and doesn’t want more, but I hope you take Ms. Dean up on her offer and publicize the story. We need, as a community, to say this is unacceptable.
Completely agree with #5 katzenjaammer. I do hope that you will take Ms. Dean up on her offer. It’s not so much an individual issue as it is the community saying it is not acceptable, but the community needs the victim to speak out, please.
Dear Cyclist, as a fellow cyclist, I urge you to please take the offer from Rochelle Dean to share your story with 8-news.
There was a very bad hit and run a few years back in Bryan Park and the case was finally solved after the media helped spread the word about the vehicle involved.
Telling your story could really help.
I’m glad he is doing okay. My boyfriend and I rode this path Sunday and it is quite dangerous.
There are so many people driving on this road that FLY! If I am correct, the speed limit is 35, not 65.
I know the PD is already busy, but they really need to set up some speed traps along this stretch of road. It would be nice to not have these types of accidents occur.
I also agree with Rochelle Dean and Elaine Odell. Take this story to the news. Maybe you will get justice by finding your SUV driver, or maybe implementing new laws.
As a new biker I am more than aware of the dangers of autos/trucks that think they own the road and everyone else, “better just get out of the way”! I am so sorry that this happened to your brother or anyone but this is not the first time this issue of high speed driving and cutting through neighborhoods has been brought up to authorities/police. As people jet in and out of the City, they use neighborhoods as personal freeways – regardless of the children, pets, bikers, joggers and pedestrians. Also there is the mental paradigm that comes with our society that accepts using cell phones, texting, blasting numbing music and TVs/videos inside vehicles. Drivers ONLY pay attention to driving when there is nothing else to occupy or entertain them.
I believe the combined East-End civic associations need to step up pressure on the authorities/police. And while the police enforce the already existing laws, there needs to be a long term plan for a commuter by-pass system around the already compressed and saturated river corridor area.
Yes, the corridor from the City to the East is a means of commuting but not be a raceway. It needs to be driven at safe speeds and respectful to neighborhoods, businesses and the people living therein.
I am glad that your brother didn’t sustain even worse but this situation with police and paramedics really pisses me off! Why the F__k even wear emergency ID information if they don’t check them and follow instructions?
#10 it is not the responsibility of the police/paramedics/fire to contact family in situations like this, nor is it appropriate. These folks were addressing immediate emergency needs. Typically the hospital would have contacted the family if necessary – necessary being the patient was not conscious. It may not be convenient to the family but stuff happens. The id is used in case a patient cannot identify themselves.
In re my brother, the cyclist in this story, recent x-rays show 4 broken ribs not detected during his stay at MCV immediately following the crash. He IS lucky, I suppose. But still…
