A pre-interstate map of Richmond published by The Automobile Blue Book Publishing Company in 1919.

Interesting! One bridge across the James for traffic and one for the RR. National Road – isn’t that Route 60? Okay – this was before route designations, right? (A bit before my time!)
How did you find this gem?
I forget how I ran across it. I was looking for something else and snagged this along the way. Neat, eh?
When and why did Chamberlain become Chamberlayne?
This is back when Belvidere Street was a one lane road with row houses, like Pine St. and Laurel. St.
I found the map on one of the historical maps sites… being that it wasn’t a full map, I passed over it. JCM, it’s not including the Mayo bridge which is our oldest bridge having been in existance since the 1700s in one form or another. No clue when Chamberlain became Chamberlayne… I was trying to see if it was a typo but it doesn’t seem so. I believe the original street was named after a property owner that it ran on or near.
