Population density and bus stops

Population Density and Bus Stops – City of Richmond, Virginia by Stuart Squier
There appears to be a 1/4-mile buffer around each bus stop. This seems like a suitable walking distance to a bus stop.
I’d like to know the population density of the green areas.
What is the population density based on? It doesn’t appear to be census tract…
is it just me, or is there an excessive number of stops along east broad street? it seems a little inefficient for there to be a bus stop EVERY SINGLE BLOCK… i think it would be faster for those riding (perhaps healthier for those waiting) if they spread it out to every other block.
just my two cents…
NewGuy, you are right that is a 1/4 mile buffer around the stops. The green layer is actually a hillshade of the base map raster, it does not show density. The blue to red scale areas show a function of both density AND bus stops, so the density of areas without stops are not measured (green). The population density is based on census blocks and depicted in relation to the block centroids. The orange areas have population density greater than 50 persons per acre AND more than 10 bus stops within 1/4 mile of the block centroid. Those are functionally the “urban core” with both the highest densities and the most access to the transit system.
Since they’re based on census block information, I assume that the data is from the 2000 Census. It will be interesting to see how the density has changed once the 2010 Census results become available, which should be sometime in 2011.
The bus only stops at bus stops that have people waiting, or if someone rings the bell to stop, so it doesn’t necessarily stop at every block. Having a bus stop at every block simply makes it more convenient for the people taking the bus.
Yes, but a bus stop with the massive canopy (or bench) and signage on every block is a real eyesore in my opinion. One bus stop every other block would be just fine, and it would reduce the cost of needing to maintain a canopy/bench on every block along with the trash receptacles and inevitable litter.
I’m confused. How do you display two variables with one color scale? What color would it be if an area had high population density but few bus stops (or vice versa)?
hey if you dont have trash cans available will you then chastise people who drop their trash? tiny brings up a good point.would you rather an elderly or loaded down housewife sprint the extra block?ride a bus sometime you might enjoy talking on your phone without driving like an inattentive geek.buddycorbett
So since there isn’t a trash can on every block it’s ok to throw your garbage on the sidewalk because that is more convenient? That same laziness appears to be the mentality of one local woman who repeatedly discards gnawed on chicken wing bones on the sidewalk next to the local bus stop. Absolutely disgusting. And yes I do chastise her and everyone else with the same lack of respect for their neighborhood, themselves, and their neighbors.
ah yes the “chicken bone eaters”. everybody hates THOSE fuckers. dude its people like you who show a lack of respect for people who use public transportation. let me guess youre one of the people who love living in a historic neighborhood but are a little weirded out by your neighbors cause they are not just like you. here a thought,INTERACT with your fellow denizens instead of pursing your lips and muttering about”those” people. you might meet another person not a “chicken bone eater. betteryet if you live by a bus stop and dont see a trash receptacle make your supercan available .it wont kill you and you might get some of the trash out of your way. too reasonable a solution for your sense of outrage? shaking my head in wonder buddycorbett
Your use of profanity and denigration to create a politically charged effect is obvious and silly. I choose to live here and have for a decade, so don’t preach to me.
Respect your neighborhood; respect yourself, that’s what makes Church Hill great. The minute, however, anyone shows a lack of respect for their neighborhood, I take offense. We have something special here, let’s not screw it up.
buddy
i ride public transportation. i love fried chicken. i have no respect for those who throw bones down (near the bus stop, along the hill side in chimbo park, etc) come on people, take care of your own neighborhood. if you won’t who will and certainly don’t expect anyone to do it for you. but we should have more trash cans around.
@ #10 – That totally works.
I had a problem with folks hanging out in my alley, drinking, eating, then leaving all of their bottles, cans, and trash in their wake.
So, one day when they were out there, I walked out, pulled my supercan out of my yard and into my alley and asked them to use it.
Totally worked. They hang out all the time. My supercan stays in the alley and is constantly full of Steele Reserve cans.
if i’m the only one who thinks bus stops on every corner is excessive, that’s fine. it’s something i think about every time i ride the bus (which as a matter of fact i am in the habit of doing). buddy, how did you know that i am a geek?
i’d also be in favor of getting all of the street parking off of broad street to have dedicated bus lanes going the whole length. again my M.O. is efficiency and seeing the public transportation system improve. who’s up for dedicated bus lanes? or would that prove to be an inconvenience to a group of marginalized individuals that i am insensitively neglecting?
A hillshade is irrelevant in this situation.
I’d appreciate a map that depicts underserved areas of the City…
#11,where in yor post do you say respect your neighbors?i mean i see the part about respecting yourself and the neighborhood but how about the other residents who dont share your exact viewpoints? before u whine about being denigrated please understand thats its personally hard for me to listen to someone make c such hardhitting anonymous comments.if you cant stand a certain group of folks just say so dont be so chickenshit as to blame it on their food preferences. if you really want to get alook at how cha members feel about bus riders look at the meeting minutes where the grtc guy got ambushed under the guise of answering questionsabout putting the bus hub in main st. station. yeah ,that that will really make you feel like part of “something special. oh and mike i have lived here myself for over ten years so why dont you climb down off your cross and quit your crying. put out a trashcan by the offenders and do something about the problem . you dont have to talk to “those” people and you can do something to better the neighborhood we all love so much in our various ways.buddycorbett
chicken bones and crab claws in chimbo park is disgusting… even worse, the folks who perpetuate this bad behavior don’t live in the area around chimbo. I know that it’s a CITY park but they should stick close to home and trash the parks in their hood. this is especially baffling when there are trash cans throughout the park.
