Drink Tru-Ade – Pasteurized for Purity
Recently uncovered at the site of the almost Church Hill Market. Much thanks to Deanna Lewis for the photos.
The same ad used to be on the front of the commercial building on Jefferson across from Alamo. Can that building be Monument’ next project? Please?
What will this building be when finished?
I believe this is Monument’s project.
#2, as I recall the street level is to be commercial, I don’t think they ever announced a tenant, and the upper levels are to be residential apartments.
the commercial space is for rent. The back and upstairs are three two bedroom apartments
…. I hope they paint over the sign.
I for one think the sign is charming and should remain. It reflects a quaint time and the history of this little place called Church Hill.
@7 – I agree!!
#7 chpnfan, I totally agree with you. But I wonder what the historic tax credit folks say about these signs as they are uncovered, or if they are even covered in the preservation regulations, I sort of doubt it. Anyone out there an architectural preservation expert like Kim Chen?
Laura #6, why would you want them to paint over it? Just wondering what offends you about the sign. It was a typical sign when it was put there. Sort of a ‘sign of the times.’ Last year when I had a relative and his wife visit, the wife was entranced with the faded painted sign on a brick building for something like this, she thought it was great that is was still there.
Oh I love the new (old) sign…Laura why do you want to see it painted over??
I love the sign and all the other painted signs in the neighborhood. The signs are a part of what is great and unique in CH.
Another vote for keeping the sign, it has been fairly well preserved by the covering that was removed. I think a layer of clear coat to protect it is all that is needed.
Anyone got an idea of aprox date for the sign?
Clear coat… great idea!
I love that Que Pasa restored their Bromo Seltzer ad but the weathered version had so much character. http://www.chpn.net/archives/bromo-seltzer.php
Someone please lease the lower level and bring a record store to Church Hill!
“record store to Church Hill” now there’s a winning idea. it would be closed before it opens….
@ #9/crd Regarding your question about Tax Credits (VA DHR) and original commercial signage on historic buildings:
Based on my limited knowledge/experience with Tax Credit projects (I’m on only my 2nd one now,) commercial signage like this (based on it’s time period/message/professional quality of painting) is addressed in the NPS guidelines. As i understand the guidelines, it its strongly supported and the property owner is encouraged to preserve signs (like the TruAde professionally-painted advertisement) when restoring the building.
Thanks Elaine for #16. If NPS guidelines encourage preservation of such signage, I hope Monument can figure out a way to preserve this one.
It seems to be some-what successful in Oregon Hill: http://www.vinylconflict.com/
We’re currently putting together a business plan to turn this into a neighborhood market (similar to Shields Market and Olio) and community meeting area.
We would offer Specialty Foods, a nice variety of Wine, Beer (to include microbrews and specialty batches), a deli counter, prepared meals, and produce (hopefully through a local farm).
Our community meeting table will be a large table that seats 12-14 people and can be reserved for meetings or gatherings (at no cost) by members of the community.
Would you be willing to support this type of business on the hill? What are your thoughts and feelings? Any ideas for names?
I’m all for this.
Please don’t play with our emotions. What you propose sounds incredible and long overdue.
I love Olio. Something like it in that spot would be amazing.
I promise I am extremely serious about this. We are writing a business plan, meeting with potential vendors, trying to obtain funding, etc. We need support from the community to obtain a bank loan, though. Please feel free to email us at market.churchill@gmail.com with comments / feedback /support for this project. We need to prove to the bank that the community wants this!!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea!
paint over the sign? i can not believe someone actually suggested that!?
Brooke,
What your saying sounds too good to be true. I moved here from the fan and lived directly across the street from shields market. I remember when that placed opened it went bananas…and still does. If you like, i can put you in touch the gentleman that owns and opened it if you would like to get some perspective from him. Let me know-gchildress1775@hotmail.com
LOL @ #21!
The DPZ led charrette was supposed to conclude with a study showing demographic need for a market. Check with Bon Secours or our councilperson, Cynthia Newbille.
Yeah! Our household would be thrilled to support and collaborate with this type of business.
As for funding sources, City CAO Peter Chapman was on WRVA recently talking about new low interest loans available to small business in the city. The rates as low as 2%. Contact Econ. Dev. office in City Hall.
I love the idea, too. Could you also include some convenience items, like aspirin and toilet paper? I think it would receive more patronage if some household merchandise was offered as well as food and drink.
Gems like this are truly windows into the past! Why on earth would you want to be rid of them?
I’m a Church Hill artist who’s passion is traditional sign art. I love these old signs and the old style in general and would love to be preserving old signs and/or painting new logos to look old here in the neighborhood. Please contact me at firstlineout at gmail dot com for more information
Will the store offer standard staple type items, or will this be a strictly higher end place? I would love to have a place this close where I can pick up a bag of sugar or some eggs if I forget them while supermarket shopping, and even a place to get an ice cream sandwich if the ice cream truck is not roaming. But I would not buy a $4 ice cream sandwich, or a lot of $6/dz eggs or special superfine sugar straight from the bayou. Basically, will is store have “regular” supermarket items?
VERY exciting!
Brooke, I’ve already sent an email to the address you provided expressing my support. Hopefully that, in addition to the other letters of support you receive from the neighborhood (wink, wink, nudge, nudge to the rest of you reading CHPN), will convince the lenders there is a demand for a business like this on the Hill.
LB, Thank you for your question! We are absolutely planning on offering staple items at a competitive price. I think the prices at Market are outrageous (especially for the shopping experience and quality of the produce, etc). Obviously, with only 1200 square feet, our selection will not be as large, but we are hoping to give the neighborhood an alternative to the Market without having to drive across town for a carton of eggs. We are excited about this type of feedback and welcome any suggestions/requests. Thank you, LB, and have a great rest of the day!
Brooke,
Sending you an email. I am an ex beer buyer and manager from a high end wine and craft beer store. I would gladly help out for free, if it meant being able to buy good craft beer and wine in my own neighborhood.
Cheers,
James
It isn’t hard to beat The Market. That place is an awful excuse for a grocery store. I was in there last week just trying to buy some grated Romano cheese, and was saddened to find that half the containers were blue with mold. It didn’t end there… the cheddar was also turning into blue cheese. Yuck!
Brooke,
What a wonderful idea! I know my household would shop there not to mention my others in the area. I think what you’re describing would be a fantastic alternative to “The Market”. I’ll be happy to e-mail you and suggest that friends do as well…
Fab-U-lous idea!!!! It would be so wonderful to have an alternative to The Market, especially one that is so much closer!
Also, KEEP THE TRU-ADE SIGN!!! It adds so much character!
I’d much rather walk for groceries and support a neighborhood business than drive given the chance any day… great idea Brooke. My business partner and I will send along emails of support to your address. We restore houses in Church Hill. Your business would be a great addition to the neighborhood.
You should consider starting an online-petition for your proposed business here and have interested neighbors sign a door-to-door petition indicating neighborhood support for the bank.

Hunter and I want to thank everyone for your support! We are so excited about the response that we have received from the neighborhood. We appreciate all of the encouragement and offers to help- we can use all that we can get! : ) And, thank you especially to those of you who are emailing us and encouraging your friends to do so. The more support we can show, the more likely we are to be able to get funding for this project. Thanks again!
Oh, and to those of you who are concerned about the sign… WE LOVE IT TOO! Isn’t that what Churchill is all about? Not sure if that will be our decision… but we’ll keep you posted : )
Monument is doing A#1 restoration work… don’t see how they could not recognize the gem they just uncovered 🙂
I can’t recall 100% if the laundromat they are now restoring had writing on it. If so, it was faint and worn. This is perfect and worth preserving.
HEY! Another Shannon! Hello there… 🙂
I guess now I will be Shannon H., formerly known as Shannon.
I think Hill Top Market has a nice ring to it!!
I know. You should name it, The Church Hill Market”!
Ruth, thank you for your comment. That name had already been purchased by Mason so we didn’t think that we would be able to name it the Church Hill Market. Yet, Mason has been extremely generous and has agreed to sell the name (and his logo!) to us. So, yes, if we can get this project off the ground, we will name it The Church Hill Market.
Did everyone see that the front windows went in yesterday? Drive by and check it out if you haven’t already!
Hey everyone- As many of you may have heard, the owner of Captain Buzzy’s has leased this space. Rumor has it they will be selling pizza and hot dogs. Although we were extremely disappointed (especially because we finally have potential investors/business partners lined up), we wish them all the luck and look forward to another thriving business on the Hill. That being said, please don’t give up on us! We are looking at more spaces on Friday and, hopefully, we’ll be able to find another spot that we love as much as this one! If any of you know of local businesses that sell produce, fresh-baked bread, etc, please have them email me at market.churchill@gmail.com as we are working on lining up vendors and setting pricing.
Cheers!
Brooke, I’m sorry to hear about your difficulties finding a space. I recommend checking out the vacant storefronts at the following intersections:
– N. 25th St. and O St.
– N. 26th St. and O St.
– N. 26th St. and Q St.
I think they are all in the City’s Enterprise Zone. They’d all need some rehab work, and I’m not sure if you’re up for that; but, if you are, you’d be a welcome addition to the area!
Ugh, pizza and hotdogs? WTF? I was hoping for something not so close to junk food. If I want Pizza, I will walk down to Aziza’s or even Sette.
Is 27th and Marshall too small?
This news is so disappointing. We don’t need another pizza place when we have Sette and Aziza’s already just down the hill.
I hope you do find another location and cannot wait for this to happen!
In my opinion, a location on 25th Street would be ideal. Good luck with the search, Brooke:)
@49 and 51 – Don’t forget about DaVinci’s on 25th St – their pizza is really good!
I drove by last night and saw that they were open, and I seem to recall that it is called Buffington’s? I can’t find any sort of website online, was hoping to check out a menu….anyone tried the pizza yet?
Pizza was decent, fries were awesome. Great toppings on both though the pizza dough was premade. Hopefully they’ll go fresh dough once they work out the kinks.
did they get their beer licence? If they did beer sales may trump pizza sales.
I’m interested in the pizza menu. Anyone have a pizza menu? And do they deliver yet or is it just walk there and get it? Sounds great either way and I wish them the best of luck!
