Man fatally shot in Whitcomb
07/14/2010 9:13 AM by John M
In what is Richmond’s first murder of the summer, a man was killed just before 8AM this morning in the 2400 block of Wood Street, by the unused Whitcomb Court Elementary School. This killing Richmond’s stretch of more than 50 days without a homicide, and is the East End’s 7th for the year and the 20th for Richmond in 2010.
I was hoping for at least two consecutive months without something like this happening…
I think 50 days is a pretty good run. If we got to the point where that was standard, we’d only have a handful of homicides per year.
It is worth remembering that the East End went almost 6 months over the end of 2009 into 2010 without a homicide (from early August 2009 to the end of January 2010).
Richmond Police have identified the man found shot to death this morning as William A. Charity Jr., 46.
At approximately 7:54 a.m. today, Richmond Police received a call for a person shot inside the residence of 2408 Wood Street. When they arrived, they found Charity dead inside his home.
Investigators do not believe this was a random incident and are following up on several strong leads based upon strong community support.
Investigators ask anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
nbc12 has that a man inside a home on the 2600 block of Melbourne Street surrendered to police and is being held for questioning in connection with the murder.
The RTD is reporting that a Chesterfield man, Jataynun Fleming, wanted for this morning’s slaying in Whitcomb, has died after a standoff with police in the city’s southside:

Richmond Police have charged a second person, Talisha Wright, 19, of the 1900 block of Cedar Street, with conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the crime. Wright was taken into custody during the barricade incident on Beaufont Hills Drive on Wednesday.
