Contractor for a renovation?
07/28/2010 8:36 AM by John M
A reader writes in seeking:
“recommendations on contractors who have either done extensive home renovations or built additions in our neighborhood. More particularly, I’m looking for contractors who fall outside ‘the usual suspects’ of Church Hill.”
I’m guessing the usual suspects would be RBVA and Jewels Inc?
TAGGED: question
I’d still recommend RBVa (David Cooley) even if you do consider him a ‘usual suspect.’ His office phone is 649-2162. Also, you might try Rob Pate – company is Fair and Square, phones 344-0008 or 350-0969.
Both of those guys have done extensive home renovations in Church Hill, and own property and live in Church Hill.
I would be pleased to recommend Brent Winn the owner of Gunston Restoration and Construction L.C.- based close to the Boulevard. LHe extensively renovated our house complete with two story addition on rear. We are delighted.

My wife and I have just completed a kitchen renovation after major water damage, and the contactor we used was good. His name is Tory Smith of TSSmith Contracting his phone number is 804-332-4244.
I’d suggest Jim Ingersoll with cheaprichmondhomes.com
My wife and I are currently talking with him about getting a recently renovated place in CH. He’s a really good guy, check out the site.
Well I would suggest that you do the renovation yourself. It’s easy if you just follow these steps: First, order the DVD’s from the last three seasons of “This Old House” and “Ask This Old House”. Second, go to Lowe’s (the one on Broad Street by VCU of course) and buy a sledge hammer, some tar paper, a nail gun and some paint. Actually, forget the nail gun and just buy some glue. Third, start renovating! I assure you that everyone who passes by will be sure and stop to give you advice as to all the things you’re doing wrong so by the end of the day, your renovation will be perfect!
The usual suspects? Do you mean this line up?

Try Jim Yeatts at Reveal. He’s detail oriented and has done a lot of work throughout Richmond, though I don’t know how much of it in Church Hill. His work is top notch. I think Reveal Inc. has an ad on CHPN but the website is http://www.revealinc.com/
Tell me, why can’t we get through a single item without someone diverting it to their cute, inane purposes?
Does it need to be a Church Hillian? I have a suggestion, but he works mostly in the fan/ museum district.
I know Tory Smith he did work on my house and he is a good guy who stands behind his work. I also have an AC guy who is amazing.
Hey WhoDat!, I don’t know if your suggested “contractors” can build a fence, but there’s no question that they can handle a tool!
Hey Michael, I prefer to consider “off-beat” postings as quirky and provocative, somewhat like the People of Church Hill. Lighten up Dude, you’ll live longer.
we are in the middle of a renovation with Tom Haines of Haines Construction and have been very pleased w/ everything so far– we are almost finished– its been very smooth- and he is very detail oriented and really treats the house like it is his own..
Augustine Construction
He’s been doing great work for years in Church Hill, and even did his own home. I have friends that live in some of his finish projects and love it.

Matt Elmes, Atlantic Crest LLC. He did an awesome whole-house plus addition for us 1 1/2 years ago. I’m also aware of several other projects he did in CH and in the Fan and Musuem districts. He’s a good guy who does good work. Of course, he lives in CH and has a vested interest in our community – so I don’t know if that is good concerning your ‘usual suspects’ comment. And to piggy-back on #1, Mr. Cooley and Mr. Pate are well regarded. Good luck with whomever you decide to go with.
@6 WhoDat! and @11 Displaced in YPV.
Love your sense of humor! Thanks for some smiles
#14, I should have thought of Matt Elmes too. Although maybe he’s part of the usual suspects, as you mentioned. I was in his house on the Holiday House Tour two or three years ago, and it was stunning. I’d put him in the same place as Cooley and Pate, too.
No. 9 (Kristin), please do share your suggestion for the person who does work in the fan. Thanks!
No. 5 (Displaced), looks like you have time on your hands, are you handy with tools?
I second #12 I have worked with Tom Haines at Haines Contruction and he is great.
I would like to point out that I bought my house from Jim Ingersoll (mentioned in #4 by Chad) last September and we have had many problems! He uses cheap labor and materials. Our front porch is splintered and falling apart and needs to be replaced. We’ve had extensive roof leaks and repairs, electrical issues (he installed the wrong thermostat on our furnace/heat pump and several electrical outlets died after we moved in) and he’s very difficult with which to get in contact. When his men came to repair the interior damage from the leaky roof, they couldn’t match the paint, clean up the extensive plaster dust (despite drop cloths) nor could they speak English. Huge, annoying problems.
