Mosby Express Mart goes for ABC on Tuesday
08/02/2010 9:13 PM by John M
The hearing for the Mosby Express Mart’s VA ABC license application is Tuesday, August 3 at 1PM at the Hermitage Road ABC offices. (VA ABC docket [.doc]).
Today’s hearing lasted over four and a half hours and included nearly a dozen witnesses only one of which supported the issuance of the license. Two letters were submitted, one for each side. Don Coleman, RPS school board member provided a letter in opposition and Beth Sarrett submitted a letter in support of Mosby Express Mart. A parishioner from Temple of Judah supported Mosby Street and testified that her fellow congregants visit the store and that the Murshed family (who also own the Blue Wheeler and Clay Street market have supported their ministries whenever asked.
Opponents included 6 nearby residents and 3 business owners. Their objections focused on the the nexus between the intense density of beer and wine stores within 1.5 miles of the location and the rampant alcohol abuse and frequency of alcohol related crimes and litter in the area. The Virginia ABC Board already has recognized that connection when it restricted the sale of airplane bottles at the state run liquor store at 25th and Venable.
The Hearing officer shield issue an opinion either issuing the license as requested, issuing the license with restrictions, or denying the license within 30 days.
If the Mosby Express Mart is good enough for Beth Sarrett, then it’s good enough for me!!!
There has to be a better process for reviewing & opposing ABC licenses than an ALL afternoon hearing. No wonder most people can not attend. This process has to be streamlined! And there is still no ruling at the end of the day.
i emailed the abc to tell em i had no problem with the mart license. he told me he couldnt use my ok because it came too late(the day of the hearing at 10am.if they are only gonna take the comments they want no wonder it looks like it is gonna be hard for the owners to get a fair hearing. this reminds me of the historic district hearings that completely glossed over the resistance to that stick up the neighborhoods ass.if the powers that be cant be trusted what are thealternatives?
