Wanted: Childrens’ Gardener
The folks at the Chimborazo Playground Community Garden are looking for a Childrens’ Gardener:
We are looking for that one person who loves young children, a great teacher who has huge amounts of patience, and above all someone who enjoys gardening, doesn’t mind getting dirty and who understands the importance of nutritional vegetables
THE CHIMBORAZO PLAYGROUND COMMUNITY GARDEN.
The Community Garden team has very kindly reserved two vegetable plots for our local children to grow their own vegetables and to learn what gardening is all about. The children will be required to do all the work, and they will benefit enormously from the experience.
The Church Hill Association has funded the capital cost of these two plots, along with child-sized tools, with any balance going towards initial planting costs.
The Community Garden team is now looking for someone to head up the use of the two new Children’s Beds. There are people who are willing to help teach the children but they need a “Head Organizer” to make decisions, organize how they will be run, how to reach out to neighborhood children, perhaps organize transport, and to coordinate other (gardening) volunteers.
Drop a line to chimbo@tricyclegardens.org if you’re interested or to find out more.
The kids from Chimborazo/Bellevue Elementary should be involved. The garden is in their backyard. Conctact the principals. They may be willing to let the kids particpate during the school day.
The children at Chimbo planted a tree in the school yard this past spring. They never watered it…it’s now dead. I sincerely doubt they can handle anything else. When you drive by, take a look…the dead tree in front of their eyes is the product of their lack of effort. It’s pathetic.
@laura… Did any adults teach them to water/nurture it?
Don’t doubt the kids. Give them a chance. With proper supervision and engagement, you never know what could happen.
Laura, since you obviously spend alot of time and energy thinking about the community garden, maybe you can put some of that effort into being part of the solution instead of bashing everything and everyone connected to it. Just sayin’.
This spring was the warmest on record. July was the hottest month ever recorded with an average high of 94.8 degree’s, oh i forgot we had the warmest june ever too. Will have to wait to see what august and september bring, but its looking like we will have the warmest summer aswell. Its hard enough to grow new tree’s especially in such harsh conditions, unless someone went by to water the tree everyday it probably would have died anyway’s, just look at the magnolia tree in Jefferson park and i think that had a water bag around it at some point. Best bet plant in the fall. P.S The weatherman
so now we are gonna pick on kids and what? write them off ? hey neighbor i sincerely doubt you have a heart unless its some shriveled up little grinch heart so do us all a favor and step away from the kids. the only thing pathetic around here is your meanspirited attack on a bunch of kids. if you are so worried about the tree water it yourself you meanie otherwise jesus grow some empathy!.like a poster with a brain noticed its been the hottest summer on record and even experienced gardeners have had a tough row to hoe.
shove it!
The last thing I need is a lecture from some tatted-up, neanderthal, lib-tard.
Laura,
With that attitude…. I hope you are NEVER around children!
