Another house lost to demolition
08/20/2010 1:33 PM by John M
Collapsing and long-imperilled, the vacant circa 1905 brick Victorian at 814 North 21st Street on the edge of Union Hill has been demolished in recent days.
Here is a photo of the property I took back in December of 2007. For some reason, I always has a soft spot for this building. I really wish it could have been saved.

hooray! more room for off street parking!
maybe if the owners of the building hadnt tried to hog the price it might have been saved. as i recall the asking price during the speculative years was about 80,000 bucks.buddtcorbett
They should donate the bricks to me so I can finish covering up my next door neighbors ugly cinder block wall.
Photographer Gordon Stillman has a before and after of this house (and other related photos as well).
Did C.A.R. have to approve this demolition or was it so far gone that demolition was necessary for public safety, etc.? If the latter, does anyone know the standard by which these things are measured? It seems to me that many people supported old and historic district status because of the protections afforded historic structures from demolition.
