The Church Hill 5-mile run/walk?
09/28/2010 5:15 AM by John M
One of the topics at last week’s Church Hill Central meeting was an exploratory look at putting together a 5-mile run/walk, to both to being people to the area and to be a framework to get neighbors out and active together.
The CHCCA is considering pursuing holding the run/walk tandem with an existing event such as Irish Festival, or as an alternative activity for the day after Thanksgiving. The idea is early in the process and would not lead to anything any earlier than the fall of 2011. The CHCCA is seeking is looking for ideas, volunteers, and potential sponsors.

How about a turkey trot early Thanksgiving morning? Good for the appetite 🙂
Awesome idea.
I’d be glad to help organize it. We had the best time at the Maymont 8 miler this past weekend. Nothing more positive than a group of early morning runners. Great possibilities in our area too–could incorporate the flood wall area, historic parks, the Capitol, lots of hills!
I’m down for a 5k. I run almost every day and could help throw together a 5k course.
I think it would be great to hold the run/walk on a day that coincides with a Church Hill event, such as the Irish or Italian festivals. It could serve to bring even more participants up on the Hill. The Richmond Road Runners hold a Turkey Trot at U of R on Thanksgiving already, and have for some time, which may make it hard to compete against them for participation.
Shawn,
Sadly, the Italina Festival is no longer a Church Hill event…it’s a Richmond Raceway event now. Go figure…
Anyway perhaps this would go well with the Irish Fest or, perhaps, a prelude to the HOTH event tentatively planned for next Fall…
Thanks for all the great feedback.

Ok..so the Turkey Trot was a good idea but someone else thought of it too :-p
What about New Year’s Day?
I have extensive experience with event promotion and sponsorship in both running and cycling. Just as a side note, there is a great cycling event held every Oct (10th, 2010) at Chimborazo Park. I would also encourage everyone to embrace the handicapped community in and around Church Hill. For one thing, it can make drawing sponsors easier, but it also creates a atmosphere of inclusion for those in wheel chairs.
Drawing on my experience I would recommend:
* What is your catch to make this event unique. A basic 5 k is easy, but there are so many here that your turn out may less than optimal (see pick your date well)
* Identifying your target audience – racers, mom’s, fitness buffs, or anyone looking for fun and a challenge – there are plenty of short trail and park sections that could make an awesomely fun course. There’s a reason why people love the JR Scramble and Maymont 5 k.
* LOOK AT THE RRRC.org calendar. I cannot emphasize enough how important your date is. Avoid conflicts, period! Second, avoid close proximity with cherished races. A good date and interesting course can draw more folks than any prize can.
A running race is an easy and great way to bring folks out and showcase the neighborhood. Let’s do it!
