Bike theft on Broad Street
10/22/2010 6:52 AM by John M
Via Craigslist:
If you happen to see my bike around anywhere… I’d appreciate hearing about it. It was stolen [cut my chain] Monday night near 28th and East Broad. Gary Fisher– Tiburon. The picture is somewhat dated… the bike now has red-sidewalled Armadillo tires.
Was it locked up? What time of day was it stolen?
*I meant to say: Was it locked up in front of The Hill Cafe or was it on private property?
I’ve noticed that people in this town rely on absurdly insecure types of locks for bicycles. It seems that policy has worked fairly well for the majority of people, as bike theft here is pretty unsophisticated. Apparently thieves are only interested in taking unlocked bikes (and with the supply of those, it’s not completely surprising), but it’s only a matter of time before somebody realizes they can use a cheap set of bolt cutters to get through all of these flimsy cable locks. If you want to hold on to your bike, get yourself a u-lock. Even a relatively inexpensive one, when used to lock your bike to something that can’t itself be compromised (e.g. an unbolted rack) is going to virtually guarantee your bike will be safe. With the number of flimsy locks in use, thieves will go for those before one with a u-lock.
