I hate to think what these clowns have done inside this poor building now that the exterior looks like a giant blood clot. These people need to be stopped!
In other news, I saw workers working on the last of the 4 buildings on the other corner last week. Not sure what they were doing or what their plans are. Anyone else heard anything about it?
According to The Architecture of Historic Richmond by Paul S. Dulaney, this structure (circa 1813-1815) was “built as a grocery store….thought to be the oldest shop now standing in Richmond” (p.69)
I am sure it is NOT an approved CAR color nor what was planned per engineering drawings submitted back in 2008.
They have done zero inside – still gutted with dirt floors, no walls or framework, and piles of debris. I am in contact with City Council as well as the CAR who I am hoping will keep me updated on what is happening – which the building is still on Spot Blight books.
Jesse… I am sorta the historian of this building since it was part of our home by way of the man who built this commercial building in 1815 (yes, as a grocery store) also built (1812) and lived in our house a couple doors down.
I also noticed people working at least inside the old building at 400 N 27th that Charlie Johnson lived in but see no building permits issued. I asked his grandson Randal to chime in who is on another RIP Charlie Johnson thread here but nothing yet. Charlie’s three daughters co-own the building now through inheritance. Makes things a bit sticky when it comes down to who wants to do what or take responsibility unless two sell out to one. Randal did say what they do to the building won’t be a representation of what is happening with 401 across the way but we will see.
And yes, at one time Charlie owned all 4 business buildings on the corners (4-corners Charlie)…but sold off three of them about 6 years ago.
That’s one red building, all right. Wow.
When I drove by it the other day I thought I was on the set of High Planes Drifter.

I like it. Totally thought the same thing re: HPD when I passed it!
There was a very good red paint salesman who went through the neighborhood.
Has that passed CAR approval? I cannot imagine that would be considered appropriate.
House on FIRE! (Must have been a sale on red paint at Lowe’s… or perhaps it’s a new kind of undercoat…)
Isn’t that one of “Four Corners” Charlie Johnson’s buildings?
It’s absolutely horrible.

Bad choice.
Somebody is making a personal or self-serving statment – at the expense of the those living near and the community.

Eric
I dig it. Get over yourselves.
