Church Hill’s #1 Soul Food is open!

Jan writes in with word that Church Hill’s #1 Soul Food at 306 North 29th Street is open:
Church Hill’s #1 Soul Food has not advertised yet but they do have a sidewalk sign out front. Their menu is simple yet yummy looking. The folks are friendly, have a menu and were ready to serve me at 11am this morning. Their limited hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 7pm and Sundays from noon to 6pm. We are heading out right now to try them out. Their phone number is 804-344-3560 and they are available for catering.
Between us, we pretty much checked out all the sides. The vegetables are what you’d hope for: uncomplicated and delicious. I would particularly recommend the greens, and Jan says the green beans and cabbage were excellent. The yams are tooth-achingly sweet and yummy. Next time, we’ll work our way through the desserts!
I’m sure CAR would not give a pass on these colors!
Church Hill’s #1 Soul Food is closed!
Went by the place today…It’s all packed up and gone…that’s gotta be a new record for the shortest run ever in this space. When will the folks who own this building realize that there’s not much “Soul” this far south and give up on these types of menus. Obviously, the neighborhood doesn’t want it. If Something Like a Deli was something like a deli…it may have been successful.
