Got coal?
12/09/2010 10:07 PM by John M
Liz is looking for some coal:
Does anyone have coal in their basement? I need a small bin worth for a joke this Christmas and no one sells coal in Richmond anymore. Guess no one is naughty enough? Contact me at cadmerch@yahoo.com and I will pick it up. I will need the coal by next Tuesday.
TAGGED: question
How small a bin? I use coal in my coal-burning stove, but if you only need a little bit, I can part with some. I sent you an email message.
I have had no luck finding a vendor of coal in the area. If anyone knows where I can find anthracite or good quality bituminous coal for sale in the area, I’d be happy to know. I use it for heating.
Such a dirty joke!
Juliellen, now in addition to this post, you’ve got me looking for quantity for you, too. I used to use coal for heating, many years ago, when I had a Petit Godin (sp?) coal stove. Ashland Coal existed back then and delivered good quality anthracite. I will post back if I find a supply.
I usually get my coal along railroads… a good spot is near the Canal Walk or near the Norfolk Southern yard… I usually give a bad co-worker coal every year… she still has no idea it’s me.
I sas her last night, she got a good sized box from the sales dept. at James River Coal Co. which unfortunately does not sell retail. She also got some from other sources, and was planning to pick up from Juliellen, too. So she has plenty.
Juliellen, I can’t find a source of retail coal anywhere in Richmond, I’m sad to tell you.
Cadeho,that’s funny!
The homeless people obtain their coal from the stopped trains under the Lee Bridge. The trains almost always stop there while waiting for a clear track. I can smell it burning on Northbank trail while biking.
Use your imagination for the next step….
Or, on top of the new protective canopy along the canal on Dock Street, I’m sure you could find a lot of coal. Uncrushed and ready to use.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I got the amount I needed.
The coal along the RR tracks is the low-quality stuff that is burned for electricity. It’s very soft and pretty nasty. I won’t burn it in my stove because of the stench and the pollution, and I certainly don’t have the time nor the inclination to walk the tracks and pick it up. I have better things to do, it’s true.
Anthracite burns very cleanly, but the closest place it is mined is in Pennsylvania. Bituminous comes from W. Virginia, among other places, and is not as clean as anthracite, but is better than the brown stuff on the trains. But there is nowhere in the Richmond area that sells coal for home use.
Alas.
