The Glory That Is Greek Revival/And The Majesty of Queen Anne: Early Houses of Shockoe Valley (And Who Was Jane Stanard, Anyway?)

12/28/2010 8:52 AM by

Author and Richmond Magazine columnist, Harry Kollatz Jr. will speak about The Glory That Is Greek Revival/And The Majesty of Queen Anne: Early Houses of Shockoe Valley (And Who Was Jane Stanard, Anyway?) on Jan. 9, 1 pm at the historic Adam Craig House, 1812 E. Grace St.

The author of True Richmond Stories, Richmond In Ragtime: Socialists, Suffragists, Sex and Murder, will present an overview discussion about an assortment of late 18th and early 19th century houses that are near-miraculous survivors into the 21st century. The cast of characters is colorful, including Edgar Allan Poe, artist Theresa Pollak and John Adams — a Richmond mayor (not the better known president). The talk at the Adam Craig House, ca. 1784, will be complemented with photographs by Dr. Maurice Duke and a trove of oddments unearthed from Church Hill privies through the effort of Thomas Hobbs, a retired history teacher and member of the Archaeological Society of Virginia.
