25th Street to be closed for a month
01/24/2011 4:20 PM by John M
The intersection of 25th Street, M Street and Jefferson Avenue will be closed Monday, January 24 through February 24:
Construction begins Monday on modification of the truck apron at each intersection into the roundabout. The work will begin at the northern intersection of 25th Street and M Street, and progress counterclockwise through the intersections. Each intersection will be closed while construction is underway.
TAGGED: 25th Street
Can anyone explain what “modification of the truck apron” means?
Probably a waste of money. This roundabout hasn’t even been there that long. How can it need modification so soon after it was built?
I think I remember reading that buses have a very hard time navigating the circle. Maybe that’s the issue? Just guessing.
Here’s hoping the detoured traffic/construction will deter the drug deals that seem to happen at M and 24th!
The apron around the inner circle of the roundabout is intended to be able to allow large trucks and buses to roll over it so they can navigate the circle safely. Currently the apron is too high and causes buses to bottom out. I think they’re going to remove the concrete and pour a lower apron.
@ Observer, you really need to get a life! If you have time to post it on CHPN, then you obviously have enough time to call the police and let them know what is going on in that area! This is an informatory of the construction being done in our area and how it may become an inconvienance for us getting home, going to work, walking our dogs, morning exercise or whatever we may do in that area!
#3 & #5 thanks! Just goes to prove it was poor planning on the city’s part when they built the roundabout. As I said in #2, a waste of money (thanks Richmond!).
#6: How do you know if Observer calls the police or not? You don’t! #4 has just as much right to post a comment as you do. Perhaps the drug deals that happen at 24th and M are an inconvenience for those that are walking their dog or getting their morning exercise. Perhaps the drug deals don’t bother you but clearly they bother some folks who live in the area!
My neighbors and I have, in fact, called the police about this already. I was hoping to draw further attention to the issue by commenting on this post since many of the people who will be detoured may wind up driving by M and 24th and noticing the activity that occurs there. Increased awareness only helps fight the problem!
I continue to hate the traffice oblong on 25th. It is just a giant obstacle, that yes, does slow down traffic, but it also causes confusion and can be dangerous, especially for pedestrians. The East End Center is right there and it has a lot of foot traffic. The only safe traffic solution for a pedestrian is a street light with a button to allow people to cross safely.
Traffic circles are intended to calm traffic and i think the 25th & m one does just that. People need to learn the rules on how to properly navigate it. I think that will get better with time. I drive through it multiple times per day and my biggest area of frustration is with pedestrians who choose not to cross at the cross walks. That is neither the fault of the city nor a design flaw of the circle.
Your right! I dont SEW! You are the CHPN Political Nazi! You know everything that is going on in everyones neighborhood or have to give your input. Sometimes dont you ever feel like it is beating a dead horse when it comes to drug dealers, drug addicts, theft and other activity happening in Union Hill? The more you fight the more “I” as a homeowner and residents of Union Hill loses. I use to call the police who never gets there when they need too. the reprocussion my windows keep getting bust out of my car, my husbands work truck and car tires slashed or flattened and even my house was broken in and vandalized. Calling the police anonymous to me still cause me consequences. Criminals are smart. Police begin to think I was a nuisance for calling and complaining and when they are dispatched the criminal activity is done and over with. The police frequents these areas and see the same people, doing the same thing and it does not throw up a red flag for them to harass them. They put in shift like they are going to a job but standing and walking in the same area. If it is so bad over there I will make sure I find another way to walk my dog, jog, do not visit tricycle garden( only the new location), stop at that store to pick up a few items, participate in trying to get this restauraunt going in Que Pasa location, attend these meetings, or continue to be a homeowner in Union Hill.
Hummm Survivor,
I’m the political Nazi? Not really sure what that’s supposed to mean. Care to enlighten me?
In regards to your other words, clearly the horse we’re beating isn’t dead as the drug dealing, etc. continues. I suppose we should just take your advice and let the criminals rule. Don’t call the police…they don’t do anything! Nonsense! SOME criminals are smart…the ones up here are not. They are street level punks and thugs. They will continue to deal, steal, and cause problems if no one does anything.
This area has come a long way in just the seven years I have lived here. If you’ve lived here longer, I suspect you’ve seen it come further. I see no sense in not being vigilant and helping the area go further and improve more. Feel free to do everything you say you’re not going to do anymore just because of the drug dealers. Do that, move, or grow a set.
There has been a policy decision taken by RPD not to pursue aggressively arrests in drug possession or PWID cases. I have had brass tell me as much. These “quality of life” issues are just not as important as keeping down the body count and B&Es (though it’s hard not to see the connection). RPD’s policy is best summed up as “No gun? No body? No problem.”
We’ve spent a decade asking for improvements in Union Hill and the only thing that has made a serious difference is redevelopment and repopulation of vacant houses. I’m sad to say RPD is not an active partner in cleaning up “quality of life” crimes. They deserve ample credit for reductions in the homicide rate.
If we want the full participation of RPD in clearing up the crimes that affect us most regularly, we have to go over their heads and perhaps use an Old Media technique: a letter to the editor asking for more resources to help them do their job.
We can thank GRTC (in part) for the increased illegal activity at 24th and M because they moved two bus stops there when the 25th St round-a-bout was built. Hanging out–or waiting for the bus? You always got an alibi at 24th and M. (And before anybody bitches at me about buses, I do take the bus on occasion!)
But, while it doesn’t excuse the illegal activity that might occur on ANY corner in Church Hill, #13 Houdon also is right about 24th & M: no one lives (in a house) at that corner. We have two vacant lots and two vacant houses at that intersection. No home owner, and no business owners to shoo the negative activity away.
Lately, I have noticed more police presence in the vicinity of 24th and M, and I’ve thanked the officers I’ve seen staked out there.
Even if it’s an RPD mandate not to aggressively pursue the low-level street dealers, call 646-5100 anyway for the negative flotsam-jetsom you might see, and definitely keep calling 911 if you see dealers in active mode.
It WILL make a difference if we all stay on it.
Survivor #11, I’m truly sorry for the retribution you feel was directed toward you and your property. I worry ’bout that kind of thing too, but we can’t stop fighting for our neighborhood. We’ll outlast the thugs.
Elaine,
Thank you for stating more eloquently than I was able to, EXACTLY what point I was trying to make in my original posts. It’s nice to know some of my neighbors feel the same way that I do!
I love the fact that the taxpayers, once again, get stuck with the tab for an obvious Errors and Omissions design flaw.
Why don’t they just put up an orange cone to mark the hazard like they do at all of the other hazards and giant potholes around town? It would be lot cheaper.
25th and Main (broken drop inlet-marked with cones)
14th and Canal (bricks coming out of the pedestrian crosswalk-marked with lots of cones)
13th and Main (big pothole in the middle of the road. Again, marked with cones and a PD Brooks type barricade.)
