Alamo BBQ gets 2nd place, good words
03/17/2011 7:56 AM by John M
Church Hill’s The Alamo has been winning rave reviews from critics and fans alike since it opened for its tangy, hickory-smoked BBQ. Alamo serves a very tasty pulled pork, chicken or beef BBQ with just the right hint of hickory and red oak. Their side dishes also stand-out, from Texas caviar to mac n’ cheese with jalepenos. The Alamo was a close second to Q with 41 percent of the vote.
TAGGED: Alamo BBQ
I have not been to Q so I will not disparage them but Alamo is tops for me. Alamo was the first place I ate in Richmond when I came here searching for a place to live and is a big reason why I chose Church Hill. I will never forget that spring night, eating the most delicious pulled pork and looking out over the city. Magical. Keep up the good work Alamo. You will always be #1 to us.
Now I need to hit the Q to see what all the fuss is about. I have had BBQ from just about every other place in town, and Alamo is my favorite.
Q is good but I like Alamo better!
I’ve had both and before moving to the Hill (and trying Alamo), I would have told you that Q is the best BBQ in Richmond and worth the drive to Midlothian. Now I’d say that Q might still be better for pork but I’m a brisket guy and there’s no contest on that. Alamo by a mile on beef BBQ…
One thing that Q does do that might be a way for Alamo to improve (if this is even possible) is that they offer a nice variety of sauces to meet everyone’s needs.
I personally think Alamo’s sauce is the best around but I know it’s not for everyone. Would be great if they can work out a few more varieties that are more specific for pork and beef and offer a choice.
A more classic Carolina style vinegar-based sauce for pork, a hotter sauce and/or a thicker sauce that would be good on beef to accompany the great all purpose sauce they already offer might convert the few remaining folks who haven’t already become hooked.
I used to really like Q in Midlothian and ate there frequently when I used to live in Bon Air. It’s nice to have the variety of sauces BUT I personally happen to love Alamo’s sauce better than all of them so that’s not an issue for me. Both places have really good sides…Alamo’s are more creative I think.
Last year I got a pretty bad case of food poisoning after eating at Q (pretty sure it was connected to the collard greens because it was the only thing I ate that was different from everyone else).
Now Alamo is the only barbecue for me!
Alamo’s food is better than Q’s.
Q only won because they poosted the contest on their facebook page.
