Recommend a security system?
03/21/2011 6:05 AM by John M
Patrick writes in with a question: “I was wondering if you could do a post asking reader for recommendations for home security systems. I recently bought a house […] and want to get a system. There are many reviews online, but I was curious about what other people living on the hill would recommend.”

I’ve been happy with Techline. It’s probably least expensive option out there.
I’ve used Vector for years and been happy with the service.
ADT. It is pricey compared to the others but worth the expense.
I have Dynamark- and they’re great- i was able to do all wireless service, and it’s about $40 a month
I have had ADT (formally Brinks)they have been wonderful. I dont believe that they are overly expensive when you consider what you get.
We also have ADT, and they have been great. If your home insurance is through USAA, you also get a discount on the monthly monitoring fee.
Becker and Ellington is a great local company. Their service is fantastic. You actually buy the equipment, so the up-front cost may be a little steep, but the monitoring rates are very low.
yes, we also have the wireless ADT, it’s great, and we get the USAA discount, and we pay about $31 a month, (you pay 4 times a year)
Frontpoint! They are a relatively new company, but they are awesome. You have to buy the equipment up front, but it isn’t too expensive and it is cellular. I like that because I don’t have to pay an extra 40 bucks a month for a landline that I would only use for the security system.
Monitoring is about 42 a month, and if you pay a little more, you can get an app for your smartphone that allows you to arm/disarm the system from your phone and check the status remotely.
Easy to install, good equipment, good prices, and no 2 year monitoring contracts! It really is a good deal! Plus, I know it works because my friends dog once set off the motion detector in my apartment and I got a call from them in minutes. 🙂
Check out their website (www.frontpointsecurity.com) and I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have! 🙂
I heard some good things about a company called Silverline Security on here a while back…
😉
Alarm Systems of Richmond, Ltd has hardwired and wireless and no long term contracts. For landline you can pay as little as $25.50 a month up to $29.50 per month and you get up to a 20% home owners discount for fire and security. They also offer wireless through cell (GSM) or over high-speed internet for a little more but will custom fit to your specific need. Quality Products and Service! Get quotes and references and read the contract first from all; ASR is local not national & will not sell to 3rd party.
I use Becker & Ellington and am very satisfied. As mentioned, it is a local company with a local monitoring station. Highly recommended.
Had Brinks which ADT bought out. Both managements very responsive. Set up and automaic draft and forget.
I’ve used Vector for 8 years and I’m very happy with their system and customer service. Let me know if you want the name of my point of contact.
We have Dynamark and love them. Their rates have not gone up at all in 4 years. I have accidently set the alarm off (many times) and they are VERY fast to call. They came out to my house and went over where we could save money on the equipment needed. We dealt with a Frank Pegram at 560 7233.
thanks everyone!
