Triplex and retail space at 2001-2003 Venable Street is for sale for $339,000. Last sold in 2007 for $360,000.
Losing money for destroying character. Priceless.
Agreed! Why couldn’t they refurbish those signs on the side of the building? They would have added so much character to the building!
The “Sign of Good Taste” portion was still up there about a month ago. Sad day when it was painted over 🙁
why did big johns shut down?
Do any of you believe restoring the original advertisements on the side of this building would increase the value to the bought price, or selling price? I’m all for maintaining the “historical integrity” or nostalgia of the neighborhood, but the one thing I have learned in life is that everything changes. Wouldn’t it be a boring life indeed if everything stayed the same? I’d much rather see a vibrant business in this location and am willing to cut the current owners/sellers a little slack for their attempt to revitalize this neighborhood, or at least clean up a run down property. Overall, I think it’s a much better property than it was when they purchased it and appreciate their attempts. I’m sorry they couldn’t keep it going.
Strangely, I think I agree with TAH.
A better look at the old painted signs:

Agree with TAH, too. As much as I like to come across some old signage now and then, it gets somewhat silly when old advertisments etc. are being restored. Once they’ve lost their function and a building is being used for new purposes it’s just fine to remove the old signs. A neighborhood’s not a museum.
A neighborhood is a museum, but not just a museum. I like old painted ads on old buildings, but I also like thriving new businesses. I heard the gentleman that ran the place passed away. Is that true?
