Concerning speeding on 25th Street
04/21/2011 11:34 AM by John M
Teresa asks: “Can anyone tell me who/where to contact to complain about speeding down 25th between Venable and M street?”
Thank you. I would love to see a stop sign like on Venable. People RACE down this particular portion of the block. Its like frogger trying to cross to get to my car.
Teresa,
Perhaps the police non-emergency number would be a good place to start.
It would be nice if they could do something about the horrible driving on Mosby, which has only gotten worse since that trashy convenience store opened. People race in and out of the parking lot and they constantly cross the double yellow line. There are also people walking across the street constantly, paying ZERO attention to cars who have the right of way since there are no crosswalks. It is very dangerous and annoying.
@teresa You mean, a stop sign like the one that allows a third of the drivers cresting the hill at 23rd and Broad to blow right through the intersection? And isn’t there a POLICE STATION at 25th and Venable? If that doesn’t stop them, what’s a stop sign going to do?
Maybe sandbags are a better solution.
How about some of those circles like they have on Marshall and also on Chimbo?
@4 – you got that right. We live right there and I always get a kick out of sitting on the porch watching the cars make a feeble attempt to stop. Funny thing is that some of the worst offenders are cop cars (without emergency lights on)…
Maybe some of the transportation and streetscape improvements occuring on 25th Street will include traffic-calming features…
Here is a link to the East End Transformation Plan Implementation Matrix (See: 4. Multimodal Transportation):

Nothing regarding traffic-calming features on 25th Street between Venable and M is listed in the matrix though.
Uh…Condescending is rarely constructive. Just a heads up.
I actually meant something like the circles they are putting in around Chimbo Elementary or the stop signs up and down Venable from Mosby to 25th. Or much like the stop signs they put up and down Broad Street from 21st to Chimborazo Blvd.
Anything to slow people down would be helpful. Even if they don’t come to a full stop, it is better then racing down 25th at 45+ miles an hour.
I can try the non-emergency number, but I was wondering if there was a city number to lodge these types of complaints. I mean, if someone can call the city and complain the streets aren’t being cleaned, to which they promptly send out someone to ticket those parked on the wrong side (yet, sadly, still don’t do the cleaning) then there must be a number to complain about dangerous speeds on city streets.
Maybe I’m giving the city too much credit.
@teresa, is 25th Street also Route 33 for it’s entire length? If so, that would make it pretty unique in the neighborhood and more like a state highway than a local street. I wonder if that’s why there are no stop signs currently. I’m with you though…something needs to be done.
Out of curiousity, does anyone know the course of Virginia Route 33 east of I-95? Does it come up Venable? 25th St? Fairmount?
Google maps shows it crossing the Leigh Street bridge and going up Fairmount.
Ask your member of the city council to request a traffic study, to include but not limited to a sppeed/volume survey. Then, based on that data, share it with RPD sector lieutenant. There may be engineering solutions, there may be enforcement solutions. If there is an active neighborhood association, it is useful getting them involved as well.
@Teresa, David is right. Get involved with the Union Hill Civic Association. They can help you get it done.
Come to MPACT mtg on Monday, 25th at Chimboroza School at 6 pm and voice your concerns with city officials.
