Powell to challenge Cantor
05/30/2011 5:15 AM by John M
You can’t vote for him, but E. Wayne Powell, “born and raised in Church Hill“, announced recently that he will run as a Democratic Party candidate against Rep. Eric Cantor for the Virginia 7th Congressional seat.
Dear E. Wayne Powell:
Here is what I suggest:
1. Take campaign monies you receive.
2. Flush them down the toilet.
Because that’s essentially what you’ll be doing running against Cantor. I used to live in that district and voting Democrat there was like throwing a pebble in the ocean. Cantor disgusts me as much as anyone but that district has been solidly Republican since Jimmy Carter was president. God could run as a Democrat there and get his butt handed to him.
I hate to say it but Trish is right. Cantor has that district locked and he destroyed the key.
Gotta love gerrymandering…
Though it does cut both ways. Bobby Scott could probably commit murder and still get reelected also.
@Alex–yeah, true. I’ve noticed the American electorate really likes hanging on to its Congresspeople no matter what their political stripe.
Congress overall usually gets about a 30% approval rating but most representatives get reelected easily. It’s everyone else’s representatives that we don’t like 😉
If you’re an incumbent, you’re pretty much set. 2010 had a relatively big turnover in Congress, but still 75% of the people there last year are back this year:

An incumbent would have to do sumthin’ REAL dumb to not get re-elected. Like, maybe tweet a picture of himself “putting up a tent”…
I think Cantor has been doing dumb things ever since he was elected. Why can’t a Democrat win who is at least honest about the issues, unlike Cantor?
The links in this post are broken. I’m on Wayne Powell’s (the progressive Democrat running against Cantor) mailing list. He has a new website; it’s powellforva.com.
