Recommend an HVAC company?
06/08/2011 6:20 AM by John M
HVAC company recommendations wanted. Does anyone have a fairly long-term relationship with an HVAC business with whom they are happy? We need a repair and have an annual service agreement with a company that does not return phone calls. Very frustrating.
TAGGED: question
Frank Lester Heating and Air at 402.6760. I’ve known and worked with Frankie for 18 years and highly recommend him.
Weather Crafters (based in Chester, but they’ve done lots of work up here). They stand behind their work.
James River Heating and Air. We’ve used them for years. Excellent customer service.
Hungerford Oil…right here in the neighborhood has done a ton of work for me over the years. They’ve done HVAC, furnaces, boilers, repairs, new installs…just about everything. Always, a job well done.
Woodfin has done great work for us and is always very responsive. Whomever you choose, check http://www.dpor.virginia.gov for license status, complaints and any past disciplinary action.
Midlothian Mechanical has done work for me for the past five years. They have been responsive, too; I have an annual service agreement and get same day service and a return phone call within an hour if it’s on a weekend or at night. They replaced my heat pump, being the lowest of three bids I got, and same for a neighbor. They have a website at http://www.midlomechanical.com, and the phone is 379-6222. They are also on Angie’s List.
I highly recommend Central York: (804) 359-9291
I have used them for years.
Midlo Mech, mentioned above, is pretty good too.
Green Air has always done a great job for me!

Not long term – but James River Air came out to repair one of our units last year and did a nice job. Also, I felt very comfortable with the worker they sent over – a huge plus since I’m female and was home by myself when he came to do the work.
Dominion Heating and Air, 804 266-8577, Justin D. Nelson (President), http://www.dominionheatingair.com/. They replaced our system 4 years ago and have been servicing it ever since. They are responsible, prompt, efficient and courteous! They are listed in the Church Hill Association Newsletter’s list of recommended contractors.
I second James River.
Goodman Plumbing, Heating and A/C. Based out of Southside–we lived there before moving to the Hill–but they’ll come out here. Good rates and speedy service. (804) 745-0294
It so pleasant to hear so many positive responses. I more than half expected to see half the companies in the area bashed. Indeed, I considered doing it myself as I’ve only had one experience with one of the mentioned firms, and it was not a great experience, but decided that if I had nothing nice to say, to not say (nothing) anything. I’m pleased so many people have had good service and will concede that my bad experience may be a fluke, and may even give the original company a second chance. Thanks to everyone for restoring my hope.
I second Woodfin. They’ve done ductwork and insulation in crawlspace. They are in process of replacing air conditioning on roof. Also, they have provided first rate service for 5 years. We have only kudos for this company.
Hale’s Heating and Air Conditioning installed our HVAC system when we restored our house, and we have a service contract with them as well. We’ve never had a problem with our HVAC system, and they are very courteous, and quick to respond when we have questions. I can’t recommend them highly enough. 804-751-0226.
I was glad to see this post about recommending a good hvac company since my a/c stopped working last week and I didn’t know who to call to get it fixed. I went with Midlothian Mechanical recommended by 2 people. I was told at 11:00 that somebody would arrive in 15-20 minutes so i left work to be home when they arrived. At 11:30 I got a call from the technician who said he didn’t know where church hill is and that they don’t do work in church hill. I provided directions and he said he is on his way from Midlothian. An hour later I’m still waiting. My recommendation: go with a different recommendation.
Again, Frankie Lester….He even knows where Venable Street is.
I second Woodfin.
bds #16, They most certainly DO do work in Church Hill, I live there and they worked on my heat pump on N. 32nd St. when I lived there, and they installed and maintain my current heat pump on Broad St (and my next door neighbor’s heat pump). I’ve never had problems with them finding me. I’m really sorry you had a problem.
we love James River. They do our twice yearly service.
Sorry we were late…100f, my guys working to midnight every night. No excuse. You should have received a Ph call my tech got delayed. Todd Johnson, Owner Midlothia Mechanical. I understandyou were serviced…but an hour late. Please accept my apologies. Todd
WeatherCrafters for over 10 years has provided prompt, reliable, courteous service.
Wow, thank you Todd Johnson for seeing this and posting that apology.
Never, ever, ever use Williams and Fogg. They came late, damaged my roof, used crackheads as their labor source, and blew up my furnace. When I complained, the owner accused me of lying. Later, I found out that one of my neighbors had been through rehab with one of the Fogg brothers who had worked on my furnace. Awful, rude, and incompetent.
Second to Green Air! They were a great help when my heat pump broke earlier this summer, and their website is really easy to navigate when looking for help. http://www.getgreenair.com
