Richmond Police changing tactics in Shockoe Bottom

Yeah, this seems a little overkill to me. Tons of blinding blue cop car lights and closing every street make it REALLY hard to get home when you come down through the Bottom and try to go to your house in Church Hill.
If it cleans that area up, I’m all for a little hassle and inconvenience. It would probably work even better if they’d do more foot patrol instead of sitting in their cars. A lot of the issues are starting in the clubs. DUIs are less of an issue from what I’ve seen. Have the cops go into clubs and walk the streets.
I think they’ve been taken by surprise with recent events downtown. I hope this new strategy is effective. You have to give them credit for being proactive and not just waiting for the next bad incident.
I think there are more effective strategies besides doing DUI checkpoints on Broad and closing off multiple streets and funneling people onto the interstate. I think #4 is right—an increased presence in the clubs is a very effective technique. More of that sort of thing, and less of just herding people like cattle, would have a better result.
I agree that the police need to leave their cars. In a high pedestrian traffic area like the Bottom, foot, bike and horse patrols are the way to go.
I am with Alex. That area needs help, and if that means having a bit of a police state for a while, it is worth it. I also agree that it needs to be a foot patrol. DUI checkpoints are not going to clean up the Bottom. Also, to the RVA police: Could you please get the prostitutes off the street? They are right out there, in plain site, approaching vehicles. However, I never see a single cop car stop and say something.
We came off 95 around 11:30 or so after dinner, tons of cars, cops lined up, lights flashing, etc. No one was being stopped. We, and all other cars, were just waved through. We figured they were looking for someone specifically, but guess not.
Those are prostitutes? I couldn’t tell the difference between them and a normal Shockoe Bottom nightclub patron… 😉
Age curfew for the Bottom.
#10 Alex, I’m with you LOL!
