Richmond’s new Bicycle Pedestrian and Trails Coordinator Jake Helmboldt
Church Hill Studio has a neat piece on getting a portrait photo of Jake Helmboldt and putting together the RVA Green video:
We were asked to make a portrait of Jake in the middle of January. Of course, I wanted our portrait to tell a story: about Jake’s commitment to cycling and finding ways for citizens choose a bike versus a car when they want to go from point A to B.
Snow was still on the ground with high temps in the mid 30’s. I cautiously asked if Jake could bring his bike to the shoot and pose outdoors. He came with all his cold weather gear, and was a little disappointed when we didn’t want to capture him actually riding his bike.
Hassan Pitts and I made this picture at the Church Hill overlook at the dead end of East Grace Street. Now, we need to re-create this portrait (maybe in warmer weather,) with Jake wearing a City of Richmond logo on his shirt.
Great photo! Like “Super Bike Man”. Now, how about some bike lanes across the Leigh Street Viaduct (Martin Luther King Bridge). Thanks!!
I second that.
He’s being modest in this picture with the state championship jersy on, he’s also been national champion as well.
So happy we have “Super Bike Man” on the job 🙂 On the Leigh Street bridge I would love to see the bike lanes everyone’s suggesting separated from traffic. Take out the third lane, and put small trees in planters on the inner edge of that lane, with the bikes on the outer edge of the lane. I would be like I’d died and gone to heaven!
Ditto on the Leight Stree Viaduct recommendations. I know that was a recommendation from the East End charette process, as well. There has to be federal transportation enhancement funds for this purpose out there.
Also, super bike man is super dedicated! There’s snow on the ground in the picture!!
Now that RVA has an official bikeczar, maybe he can help start an East End Greenway – John posted this idea many years ago:
