I’m posting this as a catch-all open thread for any comments/info on the current weather. Please share if you see something like a fallen tree, or if the power is out, or streets flooding or whatever. Do ask any questions that you have!
Bored? Take a moment and look back on Gaston while you still have power…
I live in Union Hill, right across from Jefferson Park. Rainy and windy so far; I went to the Market this morning and they still had tons of water, bread, beer, and milk. I got what I needed, and I was told that no matter what, they would be open at 6am tomorrow and had a LOT more stock in the back and were super prepared.
Jaime #1, that’s good news. I remember after Isabel blew through being in the market when they were running generator power, and they didn’t have a lot of things. Sounds like this time they are more prepared (and under different management now).
Friend who lives on Libby Terrace just called, tree down in back yard on south side of the street, which catches a good deal of the wind coming up the hill.
I was out around noon, there was water at the bottom of Broad St. hill, just west of 17th St, not so deep you couldn’t drive through it but still it seemed to be accumulating. And the storm drain at 25th and Main was already so stopped up that Main was flooded all the way back to the gas station. I’ve reported that drain so many times and still they can’t get it right.
E LEIGH ST/CHIMBORAZO BLVD ASSIST FIRE DEPARTMENT, TRAFFIC AND/OR CROWD CONTROL On Scene 3:08 PM TREE FELL INOT THE HOUSE FRONT PORCH/BALCONY COLLAPSED.NFD…UNKNWN IF ANYONE IS IN THE HOUSE OR NOT.
This is from the city’s website, http://www.richmondgov.com/ click on ‘Traffic Conditions’ in the lower right corner and it takes you to all the reported incidents in the city plus Henrico and Chesterfield. There are LOTS of trees and wires down.
Thank you City of Richmond. A crew has been at the corner of 26th & Clay working on the storm drain for almost an hour. They’ve got the big roto-rooter out there now and “Lake Clay” is almost gone.
3520 E CLAY ST RICH / CrossStreet: N 35TH ST FIRE, GAS LEAK (OUTSIDE) (Single Company) Awaiting Dispatch 3:31 PM GAS GRILL OUTSIDE IN REAR OF HOME .. TREE HAS FALLEN AND CRUSHED GRILL CAUSING
Also, Libby Terrace has lost land line phone service.
Big maple tree down on 300 block of N. 31st.
The storm drain at Clay and 26th was backed up. I tweeted @UtilityBuddy, they answered right away and a crew was out there a couple hours later.
The power’s blinked about four times in the last hour. Wind can be heard from inside the house.
I watched a chimney cover fly off of a building on 26th/Grace.
Tree fell on power lines in Sugar Bottom, causing power outage. Tree is not completely down, just sitting on lines. Friend is trying to contact power company, having trouble getting through to them.
My power keeps blinking, too, Trish #8. So far has not gone out completely for more than two minutes.
A few of my neighbors window screens have blown out, and a few trashcans are flying around out there, but so far so good. I’m very impressed that we haven’t lost power except for a few blinks so far.
Its getting pretty crazy in North Church Hill. Two trees down near my home at 20th and Brauers… One took down two blocks worth of powerline that is now laying in the street. Police are on the scene.
25th and cedar…tree limbs broken…privacy fence coming down. not a traffic impediment, but damage none the less
Some friends and I were on leigh street with some chain saws clearing the 3300 block road and a tree fell on our car. Gotta love bullshit karma.
regarding the tree that took out the porch at 35th and Chimborazo:that family moved in this past week. the house had sat vacant for a long time and they invested a ton in bringing it back to life. they literally finished painting the porch on Wednesday/Thursday. everyone stop by when you get the chance, pay them a neighborly visit, and lend them some encouragement!
Cole #14, bummer. Hope you used the chain saws to get the tree off the car. And that insurance covers the damage. Best of luck, sorry about the karma.
507 N 21ST ST RICH / CrossStreet: PRINCESS ANNE AVE WIRES DOWN (NO FIRE), INVESTIGATE Awaiting Dispatch 6:38 PM LARGE TREE HAS FALLEN KNOCKING DOWN WIRES IN ALLEY
That should explain any power outages in Union Hill near 21st and Princess Anne. Sadly, those without power won’t see this….
Yeah we cut the truck out. We just finished clearing the tree that fell on the house at chimbo and were moving down the street to clear the road for people needing to get by. And unfortunately we only have liability coverage. But we are going to start clearing more soon so let us know if anyone needs help.
The City of Richmond requests all residents to call 3-1-1 for all non-life threatening emergencies effectively immediately. The City has staffed the 3-1-1 Call Center and it will remain open through the night.
To ensure City employee safety, the City of Richmond will not respond to calls of down trees and power lines for the remainder of Saturday evening. City Police and Fire Fighters will respond to life threatening emergencies throughout the night. City crews will begin responding to service calls at 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

#17, where? I live on PA and 21st, I don’t see anything in our alley…..
A tree is coming out by its roots in front of my place (Broad between 29th and 30th). Not a big tree so hopefully it will land on the sidewalk and not through my porch roof if it falls. VERY impressed that as of right now (7:50 p.m.) except for a few blinks we haven’t lost power. My in-laws are in Virginia Beach and they’re getting pounded right now.
Tree down on 26th between marshall and clay. Power lines are down too be CAREFUL. We called dominion and police but so far havent seen anyone. I know there real busy now
#20 Jaime I don’t know, I just copied from the city site.
I just tried calling the non emergency number at 646-5100 and no one answered. It is pitch dark out there. What is the point of turning out the street lights?!
This was just posted on FB by channel 12:
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management said that if you don’t have power now, you may not have it for the next two weeks — be prepared.
crd #24 —
City of Richmond turned off street lamps out of concern that exposed or damaged wiring could be dangerous overnight.
Not sure if it is everyones problem, but at 31st and Marshall the street light wires are downed. I think lots of Church Hill is on the same circut, so might explain lots of problems.
Does church hill still have power? We high tailed it out of there to
My in laws in midlothian who have a generator. Wondering if I’m going to come back to a home with no electricity.
Mark #26, thanks.
To John Murden, thanks for keeping this thread live during the storm.
Some parts of the Hill have power. We do here near 28th and Clay. The houses around us do too.
around 26th & M seem to have power, thank goodness!
Except for a few blinks we never lost power. Also the tree never fell down but its upper branches are in our gutter. I echo thanks to John for allowing everyone to check in here and glad we all made it through.
What the hen happened at Mossy and R? It looks scary.
I hate auto correct on this phone! What the heck happened at Mosby and R? Did the tree fall first or the utility pole?
The area around 25th and M and back towards 26th, 27th appears to have power. It definitely blinked based on the flashing clock on our stove, but I am shocked we actually have power. We got lucky this time!
