Homicide on Newbourne Street

At approximately 5:45 p.m., Richmond Police received a call for a shot fired. Officers responded to the 2100 block of Newbourne St. and found a black male in his early 20’s outside of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center where he died.
Detectives have not yet released the victim’s identity. Detectives have not released a suspect description but they have several leads in this case and do not believe this shooting was a random act.
This is the 3rd killing in Fairfield Court, the 7th in the East End, and #24 for Richmond so far in 2011.
I heard absolutely nothing and I had my window open on that side of the house… except a crowd of people yelling about that time. I looked out and couldn’t see much. I figured it was some people fighting or some kids yelling.
Just read the kid’s name was Jamel Cobb.
I taught Jamel. He just graduated this past June from Armstrong. He studied hard, played multiple sports to stay out of trouble & always had a smile on his face. He was headed off to college this winter. Please say a prayer for his family and friends.
This has been a “light” year for East End homicies, but this one hits home for me.
Detectives are asking for the public’s help to locate a person of interest in the case. He is Kareem Montrell Tillar, 21, of the 200 block of Buffalo Road, Richmond.
When located, Tillar will be charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and questioned about the Cobb homicide.
When i heard the news i just knew it wasnt the same jamel cobbs i knew. He was a talatent person and a good friend. My blessing gose out to hs family

A judge sentenced Kareem Tillar to 34 years in prison for second-degree murder after 19-year-old Jamel Cobb’s shooting death in September 2011.
Additionally, Tillar will serve a mandatory 5-year sentence for a related firearms conviction.
