Hill Café hosts Daniel Day-Lewis
10/06/2011 8:50 AM by John M
And it happened. Last night; word is that Daniel Day-Lewis, who is rumored to be renting a house in Church Hill during the three month shoot, dined at Church Hill’s own The Hill Café.
Thanks, John, I just hyperventilated.
I hope he tries Millie’s, which is just down the hill. really good. really really good 🙂
Need to get him contributing on the blog…
I suppose I’d better start walking around with my copy of “There Will Be Blood”, just in case an autograph opportunity presents itself.
Yeah! Let’s get his honest opinion of CH.
Lora, I second that hyperventilation.
Yes it is true. I was at The Hill Cafe last night. I had the Black Bean Burger with a side of Pasta Salad and it was very delectable. I would say the people and atmosphere are a critical element to what makes Church Hill such a desirable place to live. I will definitely return while on site here and if anyone wishes to say hello please refer to me as my alias “Angus McBeef”.
Good Day to everyone…
“Angus”
Daniel Day-Lewis is sweet, and it’s certainly an honor he chose our neighborhood in which to reside. But, if I run in to Tommy Lee Jones, I’m gonna just fall apart.
Well, #7 (Angus McBeef),
If you are truly who you say you are, welcome to the neighborhood and I certainly hope you are not bombarded by us.
By the way, 2 nights ago (before I even knew you were here), I was re-watching Gangs of NY; still one of my favorites. Still wishing you and Leo would patch things up every time I watch it.
Take care and love that you’re here!
Excited to see what he will bring to the role of Lincoln. Such a great actor and a gentle, larger than life character.
i have to guess he was not indeed seriously posting on our humble blog.
This is just way too freaking exciting!!!!!
I wonder if he ordered a milkshake.
I passed him in Libbie Hill Park Thursday morning. Timeline of events:
See guy in black long-sleeve t-shirt and jeans coming up.
Realize it’s Daniel Day-Lewis.
Think “wow, cool.”
Have a cold, so as I lift my head to smile at him am immediately overcome by huge productive (thank God I had a tissue at the ready) sneeze.
“Goodness, bless you!”
Another huge productive sneeze.
“Goodness, bless you again!” Laughter.
Croak “thanks!” Realize I’ve been blessed by Daniel Day-Lewis. Wonder if that counts for something somewhere.
Funny Last night I was walking my dogs in Chimborazo when a black SUV passed me blaring a song about by atches. I looked up, prepared to say something to the offending driver when I saw Daniel Days amazing eyes staring back at me. I immediately changed my attitude and genuflected
I was in the blue wheeler waiting for a piece of their award winning pizza when I heard a commotion up by the front counter. I turned to look and it was Mr. Lewis buying a carton of smokes. Wow, I was in the presence of someone famous. Seeking to curry favor with him, I shuffled over and offered him a bite of my pizza, which he politely declined. What a man.
HOLY COW!!! I’m coming up from GSO for a show at The National in a couple of weeks. I’ll hit every restaurant in Church Hill for a DDL sighting! //wipingdroolfromkeyboard//
So I was going to buy some crack in the alley. There seems to be a different dealer than usual, a tall man shrouded by darkness wearing what seemed to be a leather duster. I approached then said “Crack Please” to the man. He stepped forward through the darkness revealing his face. “DANIEL DAY LEWIS,” I exclaimed, “Is It really You!” The man then grabbed the money from my hand and slipped me some crack rock.
TLDR Daniel Day Lewis sold me crack in an alley
I heard DDL is behind all the missing mail recently.
DDL just offered me a handy at Patrick Henry’s!
People need to stop hating on Daniel. He is a genuinely nice guy. I befriended him, or I guess I should say he befriended me this past weekend when I was making my way back from Club Rouge in the bottom. We stumbled into each other. I started to say cross words until I realized who it was and he disarmed me with his deep peaceful eyes and his “pardon me, terribly sorry”.
. We shared a moment. A moment I will never forget.
I was hoping this thread was going to lead to some good intel on where to spot him in the neighborhood.
Anyone have any REAL information? I read on richmond.com he isn’t accepting requests for pictures, which is fine. I get that. Has anyone seem him in Libby park lately? Any where else?
#22, yes I’ve had heard from a neighbor who said he’d seen him in the park, reading something in a black folio that he guessed was the script. Mr. Day-Lewis didn’t look up or seem approachable, so my friend didn’t disturb him. Have also heard from someone who saw him in the Hill Cafe, but again he wasn’t talking or making friends, seemed to want to be left alone. Everyone I know is giving him the space and privacy that he seems to want.
From today, somewhere in Richmond. He looks great as Lincoln

a friend saw him in Carytown walking past World of Mirth.
I saw him coming out of your mom’s house.
One late night recently, while driving through Church Hill, I had a flat tire. I got out of my car to look, wondering how I would deal with it, when I heard the unmistakable scrapping sound of foot-dragging zombies approaching. Even if I got back in my car, it would not be long before they broke the windows, pulled me out and ate my brains. Just as I was preparing to die, tears silently coursing down my cheeks, shots rang out! It was Daniel Day Lewis, fully dressed in his Lincoln costume, blowing off the head of each zombie with precise shots from a gold-plated submachine gun. When all were dead around me, he emerged from the shadows and silently and quickly changed my tire with a spare he kept under his stove pipe hat. I gave him a deep, ravishing kiss, our souls spinning in lust and desire until he suddenly broke away and slipped back into the veil of night. It was only after I was back in my car and already blocks away that I realized I had not gotten his autograph! Who would believe my story now?!
So he’s had like two meals in months here. What’s he doing the rest of the time for food? I know it’s only been two meals because everytime he goes anywhere the whole town goes crazy. The man must be starving by now…
I heard that he carefully caculates the price of his meals so that when the bill comes he can belt out “4 SCORE AND 7O CENTS…AND KEEP THE CHANGE!”
@Alex–supposedly he goes to Aziza’s a lot and also the new restaurant where Cafe Gutenburg used to be.
I was fortunate to be on set as an extra, and I must say, it’s good he has the role he does, as a method actor. His research has led him to act (off screen) either with a somber, quiet mood, or very polite. I was honored to share a few brief words with him, mostly about how nice a day it was.
It’s good that we as a community are respecting his space. This is clearly important to him, but also shows just how great a neighborhood we are. Just in case we decides we wants to vacation somewhere different than his normal spots.
I say it’s good he has a role like Lincoln, because I wouldn’t want to run into him in Plainview-mode.
