Rick Tatnall to challenge Mayor Jones
01/31/2012 8:36 PM by John M
Longtime local activist and Church Hill resident Rick Tatnall is the first candidate to announce that he’ll run for Richmond mayor. Tatnall, 54, says he felt compelled to run for office because the city urgently needs to overcome its inertia and develop a long-term plan. “We can’t allow four more years of what’s going on in Richmond,” he says.
I appreciate his focus on tourism (something that has been somewhat neglected by the current administration). Tourism is more than just touting history as a reason to visit RVA. It’s also about accommodating visitors with appealing infrastructure, beautiful public spaces, and world-class events.
Agree with JD on the tourism focus, but I think he’s got a long haul in front of him. Dwight Jones is part of the establisment and it’s extremely difficult to challenge that. I’ve worked on several campaigns (lost count over the years) to just get a 7th district representative on council who would actually listen to all the people of the 7th, and I’ve never been on a successful campaign there because we were always challenging the Marsh Machine. I think this is part of the same.
That said, I will gladly sign a petition to get Rick Tatnall on the ballot, and I’ll even help circulate petitions. Then I’ll wish him best of luck and hope he has a bundle of money to spend.
We can’t allow four more years of what’s going on in Richmond.
I couldn’t agree more.
One thing Rick’s got the Mayor doesn’t is passion. Good luck Rick.
Tatnall will either be insignificant (like Williams or Goldman in ’08) or merely contribute to dividing any anti-Jones voters (Grey/Pantele ’08). He’s wasting his time.
No one can be mayor in Richmond without being vetted and approved by The Pastors. They consented to Wilder; they picked the current mayor.
Screw tourism. I just want a mayor who responds to the recommendations of the city auditor…
Are you talking about The Pastors who all have big houses in Henrico and Chesterfield and commute in fancy cars to their Richmond churches? I’ve never come across a more disgusting bunch of hypocrites.
Bread and circuses bread and circuses. That is what wins elections in Richmond.
Got my vote!
Good to see this.
Way to go…you want to see total disconnect….by the Mayor….see this…http://www.newrichmondcoliseum.org/ then see this….http://www.penniesforplaygrounds.org/ The mayor didn’t have the money or could not find the money to replace a PLAYGROUND….and he wants to be reelectecd?
I’ll vote for you Rick…
