Could someone shed some light on how this process works. I have a few neighbors whose porches are about to collapse and no one really seems to care. Not even the people who are about to be buried alive.
Anybody know what it takes to get a property on this list? There’s a house on N 32nd that has numerous code violation warnings on their door that have not been remediated but the city seems to just keep letting them slide.
Brett – I would start by reporting the issue on seeclickfix.com to get the process started and see if anything gets done. If nothing changes then I would follow that up by contacting the city’s code enforcement department and let them know there is an active file on the previously mentioned website and you want to have something done about it.
I’ve dealt with this is in Byrd park. From what the city tells me is, if they are poor and do not pay any property taxes the city has no power. Prior days the city out tear down the porch and take them to court, however Wilder is gone and the money is there to address these properties.
How can we do a better job in reference to the City Code Enforcement for distressed properties. Seeclickfix.com works fine for minor things like yards, but for the soon no be collapsed porch….nothing
I would not put something on clickfix that involves code enforcement. I don’t get great results from the clickfix thing anyway. According to the latest CHA phone directory, Housing Code Enforcement is at 646-6419. And same directory, code violations related to historic preservation go to Catherine Easterling at 646-7550, and her email is catherine.easterling@RichmondGov.com but that’s only if you are in a city old and historic district – she can’t help if you are elsewhere, which I suspect is where most of these problems are happening. Hence, try phoning code enforcement.
Also, Zoning Administration is 646-6340.
I’m not sure how this court thing works – someone might try calling the commonwealths attorneys office and asking, I’d be interesting in hearing the answer. I suspect the CA would be able to explain.
If the property has more than one type of violation (types: building code, property maintenance, zoning and general crime), it qualifies for code enforcement’s CAPS program – just go to the CAPS meetings advertised on the calendar on this site. They have been very effective on many properties.
Thanks so much to all who have supplied some information. I have lived in Church Hill for five years and love it and want to help it get better every year. The reality, not all those whose places are falling apart are poor, and even if they are, why should they get to bend the rules? Seems to me that back in the day, no matter how poor you were, you could still walk outside and swing a hammer or remove trash from your yard, or at least remove a damaged porch if you could not afford to repair it. At least stop being lazy, grab yourself by the boot straps and take yourself and your loved ones out of harms way. For Christ’s sake people used to walk across the country with nothing, chop down trees, build a house, start a farm, and now if you don’t have money, you can’t do anything, and you don’t have to play by the rules? If someone dies from a code violation, who will be held accountable then? Too many things in this city are reaction instead of pro action. Until someone gets hurt, like years ago when that deck collapsed, probably not much will be done, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be ignoring it.
Oh, forgot to ask my other question. Do you just go to any of these or are there specific meetings for specific neighborhoods?
