Silent Spring
After a shocking December that saw three bizarre killings in the days right before Christmas, the East End has not seen a homicide in 2012. Going this far into the new year without a killing has not happened since at least the late 90s, and more likely the early 1960s or before.
At the end of 2009 and into January 2010, the East End went almost 6 months without a killing.
In 1994, the city’s worst year for killings, there were already 15 people killed in the East End through April 6 – more than we’ve seen in a single year since 2006.
In 2009, the East End’s best year for which information is available, there had been 3 killings by this dat.
The city has seen 7 murders so far in 2012, a rate which would be a historic low if it holds up.

Damn it John, don’t jinx it.
Magneto and I briefly discussed this fact last week. After a wild December, I did not anticipate this period of relative peace. Thank you for reporting this bit of good news, John!
The first few months of 2012 even improved my miserable outlook on living in Churchill it was so peaceful. Although the gun fire started back up in March, it hasn’t been as close to my block or as regular as it was in 2011.
Did you decide to stay-put, Bret?
QUIET!!!! You know they read this too…
The 6 month period where it seemed like non-stop gun shots and fights in the street around my way really beat me down and made me feel like my home was not even my own, just a building to hold up in. But it is amazing how a few months of relative peace can make you feel like the block is yours again and I notice all the stuff I love about CH so much rather than just seeing the negatives. So long term hard to say, but yea not looking to get out tomorrow or anything like I was a few months ago, so unless my block goes to hell again like it did for a good part of 2011, I think we will be here for a while.
