What is that noise?
04/06/2012 6:51 AM by John M
Any ideas about what the weird noise is that I can hear all over Church Hill every night lately? From where I live on 29th St. it sounds like it’s coming from Chimborazo area, but I can’t be sure. It sounds like a whirring mechanical friction noise, like a squeeky belt on some big machine. Has anyone else noticed this?
TAGGED: question
braking trains?
Not sure, I can barely hear anything else beyond the constantly barking dogs.
Depending on what time of night, I’m betting on braking trains, joining Dan in #1 with that guess.
It’s happening everywhere

I think the key word in Dan’s post is “lately” meaning if he isn’t new to the area then he has already experiened the trains going by. Any other guesses?
I’ve noticed it in the mornings while walking at Chimbo playground park and its sounds like its coming from north of there like the elementary school area or beyond. its not a train. it sounds like someones fan belt is sqealing and they just have their car parked outside their house running. that’s what i assumed it was. it must drive whoever lives close by crazy.
Okay I know what this is!!! It’s been going on for months… I was walking the other day and tracked it down… the sound is coming from Chimborazo Elementary. There is some sort of issue with the HVAC system which is causing this sound. Like a fan motor that is on its last legs. Hope that helps, and hope the school figures it out before it drives us all nuts!
I was just about to comment that it’s the Chimborazo Elementary School HVAC system, but Matt beat me to it. It’s sounded like that for a couple of years – I think we only hear it during the late Spring and early Fall months when it is hot outside. We leave very close to the school and sleep with our windows open, so yeah, it can get LOUD.
yeah it’s definitely chimbo’s hvac. Sometimes it sounds like a car wreck. We live right across the street and we’ve kinda gotten de-sensitized to it at this point but I’ll ask the principal about it .
I emailed the principal there, she is going to take care of it. Holler!!!
I hear there’s dead bodies being buried underneath the pétanque courts at Chimbo. Any truth to this, Matt? Someone should look in to this.
