The City of Richmond is making available $500/$1000 Love Your Block mini-grants (in Home Depot gift cards) to neighborhood groups to purchase the supplies needed for their local project and will coordinate city services to support the effort.
LYB grants of up to $1,000 encourage community groups to identify priority projects and develop volunteer-fueled solutions in the following ways:
- Improve citizen perception of safety, with improved lighting, landscaping etc.
- Reduce Crime Incidents and other gang/drug related vandalism; with graffiti removal, and community garden initiatives.
- Reduce trash through street cleanups/increase recycling.
- Increase street safety by filling potholes, clearing overgrown lots, removing abandoned cars.
The application deadline is April 21, 2012. Contact Jennifer Swinson at Jennifer.Swinson@Richmondgov.com or (804)646-6612 for more information.

If I’m reading this right, gardens have the power to stop gang and drug activity? Why is the city not hiring gardeners instead of cops then?
Maybe then the drunks will just pee in the garden instead of on the sidewalks?
and we are allowed to fill potholes on our own.
Just downloaded the PDF. Good news: if you miss the April 21 deadline, you can also submit an application before June 15 or Oct. 15.
I’m wondering if this money could be used towards making the blue wheeler or clay street market corners more attractive. Maybe opening up the windows and adding some of those new solar powered compactors.
Amy I am submitting a grant proposal and it looks like that is possible but they cannot be the ones submitting the grant. Any sort of improvement is better than nothing however they ask that your “group” has at least 25 members that are willing to help out.
