Council moves forward on urban chickens
06/21/2012 6:31 AM by John M
The City Council’s Land Use, Housing and Transportation Committee voted yesterday to support looking into making urban chickens legal in Richmond.
TAGGED: chickens
“…support looking into making urban chickens legal in Richmond.” What does that mean? Hell – even New York City permits urban chickens: New York City, NY. Chickens are considered pets under the Health Code. Unlimited number of hens allowed; no roosters or other types of poultry. Code mentions cleanliness of chicken area must be kept clean.
As soon as I get woken up on my day off by a rooster crowing in the morning, I’m going to be pissed at someone.
Ann,
I have to agree. I suppose that’s just another way of saying Counsel will continue to kick the can down the road and drag out what could be a very quick decision as they do with most everything else.
@Mars – all accounts that I’ve seen say specifically that people want to have hens, not roosters.
Marty Jewell playing both sides of an issue again. We desperately need a new Councilperson in the 5th District.
@anon – The Council’s Land Use, Housing and Transportation Committee has 3 members: Charles Samuels, Ellen Robertson, and Doug Conner. Jewell’s not on this committee.
This will come before the full membership of City Council this Monday:
Res. No. 2012-R70 (Patrons: Mr. Samuels and Mr. Jewell) – To request the Chief Administrative Officer to conduct a comprehensive study of the laws and regulations concerning the raising, maintenance and ownership of chickens and other poultry in the City *** and to provide the Council with recommendations for amendments to such laws and regulations.

UGH! Another “study”!
Yay! Maybe neighborhood kids can have egg stands instead of lemonade stands soon. Wouldn’t that be great?
With so many city officials’ voices raised about the importance of readily available food in Richmond where there are so many ‘food deserts’ the issue of city chickens seems to be a no-brainer. And because there are lots of cities that already have a successful handle on the issue there are plenty of examples for council to follow. It’s not as though anybody’s asking them to be pioneers.
Roosters are not being considered, only hens. For all the details, check out the Chickunz Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/chickunz
The web site “chickunz” reports that city council is meeting tonight at 6 pm to vote on whether they will go forward in regard to considering amending city code as to allow urban chickens in Richmond city. This meeting is not whether or not they will allow chickens (no roosters) but whether or not they will consider allowing chicken. Not all council persons are in favor. There is also a story in the rt-d today.
