OMG Cafe listed for sale for $70,000
According to a listing on Craigslist, OMG Cafe on 25th Street is for sale for $70,000. This would be the business, not the building.
Great Restaurant for sale – $70000 (Church Hill)
Great location in Richmond’s new thriving community in Historic Churc.h Hill It’s a Really nice place, plus a its a great neighborhood & prime location for a restaurant business w/ major walk up traffic….new Hood installed & it also has two sides to the restaurant with seperate entrances…asking $70,000 or best negotiable offer ……:..call (804)-253-4757 steph
A call to OMG was unable to clarify the situation: the man who answered the phone was not aware that the business was listed as being for sale.
It is also unclear what impact this may have on the apparently stalled Johnson’s Southern Comfort on Jefferson Avenue (originally slated for November 2011).
I tried to talk my friend into going once (to support restaurants in our area) and he said, “the name alone makes me not want to go to that place”
70k? OMG indeed.
Damn shame. Went the other day with some friends – staff was very friendly and the food was fantastic. We were planning on making it a regular thing.
This is sad. Their food is amazing.
Are they still open for the time being?
I can’t understand why people thought this place was good. The food wasn’t great, there were no regular tables and the cook acted like you were ruining his day when he had to come out from the back to cook something. He was on his cell phone the whole time he was cooking my food. They didn’t even have enough money to stock a proper bar. Starting a new restaurant involves a lot more than unlocking the door and hanging an open sign.
We also never went partly because of the horrible name, not to mention that Globehopper is just down the street.
That location has always been a problem if you do searches here. Either it was not inviting enough on the outside looking like a prison block (bars on door and window), no store front windows to see patrons inside, etc… Then the sign design was an issue for the previous and current owner. Nothing was very professional looking about them. Yes, the food was always good between the two but you have to have a good store front as well to draw in customers… location, location, location!
Now this is up for sale and the fact that the Post Office only leases the building they are in and at one time being threaten for closure (on the closure list), maybe Bilder will buy them to tear down for parking for the Theater fiasco? Those are not historic buildings – built in 1957.
What a shame. Good food, nice staff.
Steven #8, the business is for sale, not the building. Hence Bilder would not be interested.
crd… it wasn’t clear but thought it was pretty cheap for the entire kit and kaboodle.
Steph is Stephanie, the current owner’s Deandre’s wife. This BLOWS. Little tip to those of you who won’t go to a restaurant because it’s scary-looking or has a weird name–some of the best places to eat have both of those. And I NEVER saw Deandre (who did most of the cooking) or anyone else on the phone while cooking. I’ll have to get out there to find out what’s going on.
Aw man. I did not frequent OMG as often as I should have–I feel guilty. I suppose the appearance was off-putting…a personally dig a hole-in-the-wall, but I know that’s not everyone’s thing. Bummer.
Trish, as much as you want to justify how good the food is, #8 Steven is right!!! Come up with a GOOD name, make the storefront look appealing! Otherwise, don’t expect a lot of first time business!
Steven #11, I actually took the information from John’s headline. “According to a listing on Craigslist, OMG Cafe on 25th Street is for sale for $70,000. This would be the business, not the building.”
I wouldn’t have known otherwise, although I agree it did sound cheap to include the real estate as well as the business.
Speaking of John – welcome back from your vacation, hope it was good! Do we get a slide show of your vacation pictures?!
Wow, a whole lot of people can’t see the forest for the trees when it comes to food.
I don’t care about the bar, or the service, or the staff or even the look or name of a place when I go out to eat. For me, it’s all about the food. Why this is so hard for some people to grasp is beyond me. Too many people want a perfect dining experience. Go and fill Lemaire for all I care.
This place was great. Sure, they have a silly name and sure, the cook may have seemed shady or whatever. Who cares? The food was excellent.
They appeared to still be open last night. May go by tonight and get some chicken and waffles!
The renovation inside was quite nice, actually, and the food was great. They just need to have big windows to see both of those things! The bunker windows aren’t inviting.
Along the line of closing restaurants – my wife and I noticed a sign on House of Homemade’s door stating that it is also closing this month (July).
I actually thought it would pick up traffic after the strong positive review it got in the RTD. We went shortly after the review came out to try it. We were the only people in the restaurant. Everything we had was delicious–the fried chicken that came with the Chicken and Waffles was the best fried chicken I have had in Richmond. Had we not started to do a stringent weight loss program shortly thereafter, we would have been regulars. Unfortunately the food we loved the most there was all stuff we needed to stay away from on our program.
Do agree about the exterior design issues. While a restaurant can get past that and succeed, it makes it just that much harder.
The inside looked fine, reminded me of a 1950s bar and grill but it is still the outside that looks bad. For us locals who know what it is that may be fine. You can’t run a business entirely on local revenue and when people are speeding up 25th Street it is a very forgettable looking building and can be very easily overlooked by outsiders.
I had the worst dining experience of my life here. No kidding. With a party of four, every single order had something wrong with it, none of the food came out together, the bartender was clueless, and we were charged over a $100.00. The chicken was pretty good, not earth shattering. My crabcake was terrible. Maybe it was an off-night, but it was so awful that I have never been back.
Kendra Feather should teach a class on how to make a restaurant successful… Garnett’s, Ipanema, Roosevelt. All INCREDIBLE niche restaurants in Richmond.

I love this place!!! Great food and a friendly staff!!!
When will Johnson’s Southern Comfort open?
I went down to OMG tonight–the place was as crowded as I’ve ever seen it (the dining room has opens) and the food was awesome as always. I talked to Deandre and the new restaurant is pretty much ready to go and there’s been several bids on the OMG business. As he said in his post his primary focus is in getting people trained for the new restaurant. Antoine, Hassan and James are still at OMG as they have been since the beginning, always a good sign. The OMG business is strong enough so Deandre was able to pay for everything at the new restaurant–by what he said I think they’re trying to open up next month. Deandre is totally committed to staying on the Hill and hopefully the restaurant will flourish as well as OMG.
Opened, sorry, stupid iPhone. (smack)
Deandre and Steph–Thanks for the post with the info! Looking forward to supporting you in your new digs (and also, huge hugs for gluten-free, in advance!).
