Now open: Anthony’s On the Hill

Anthony’s on the Hill opened last Thursday at 2824 East Broad Street, the same block as The Hill Cafe. They specialize in Italian cuisine with a slew of pizzas on the menu.
Before all the “food critics” junk up this post…I just wanted to give a positive word of encouragement. My family LOVES having you right around the corner. We’ve had the pizza on several occasions and it’s great. Thank you for being here and I truly hope our community supports your efforts!
My wife and I had the Greek Pizza the other night and it was stupid good!!! The crust was amazing. Best wishes for the place!!!
I think it’s a great place, really casual, solid food, convenient location. They just need to get some wine in there ASAP.
Haven’t been, but looking forward to trying it. Food looks great!.
We really enjoyed the food and the staff was super friendly. Their tomato sauces were amazingly fresh and we were told that they make them on site daily. We will be making this a regular stop and are very glad to have this option around.
As I wrote in a previous post we went last weekend. Solid pizza, great crust. And conveniently located across the street from me. I’ll have to try a pasta dish next time.
We went last evening. Salad was fresh and a nice combo (Mista), we made our own combination on the pizza, the dough was nice, the sauce was fresh, flavor was good. Service was nice and attentive. Overall a very nice experience and a welcomed addition to Church Hill.
Went last night with some friends. A bit too casual and cramped for me but the food and service was excellent. I had the White Pizza and the crust was made fresh and wasn’t too thick or too thin but just right and tender as well as tasty. Had just the right amount of topping as well. Only problem is that all pizzas are 12″. Wish they would offer a 6″ single serving.
We ate here tonight and it was super yummy! We got the white and mushroom pizzas and both were great! Wonderful addition to the neighborhood!
I don’t know many pizza places that offer a single serving pizza besides slices at Bottoms Up and Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.
Let’s not hold this new place to a standard we don’t hold other local pizza places.
just a neighbor… with the often failure of businesses in the area and having a pizza place there before, as well as people being on budgets, I would offer a smaller size pizza for those who don’t like cold leftover pizza or can’t eat a 12″ in one sitting. All about variety and accommodating customers to stay in business 🙂
The cheese ravioli was awesome.
Damn Eric, when will you NOT find something to complain about?
What is wrong with a 12″ pizza?
I could see your point if, for example, the menu only offered an entire roasted chicken, but did not offer the option of a chicken breast sandwich. There is a disconnect in terms of portion size in that scenario.
But do you really think the 12″ pizza thing will stop anyone from ordering pizza?
If you want a budget menu of single-serve items there always is the McDonald’s down by the Exxon.
(also, Valentino’s on 25th has pizza by the slice).
went over the weekend and was very pleased. Very good pizza. Will make this a favorite spot.
DVinci Pizza, I mean^^…although Valentinos’ is good too.
@14: a 12-inch pizza is for sharing with a fellow diner or friend who joins you for a meal. mr. huffenstuffinposter doesn’t understand that. a closeted weirdo who gripes about EVERYTHING in this community would naturally want to eat solo–behind his computer. sad. if he’d only come out behind that moldy green clapboard siding, and actually have a face-to-face conversation with people on the street, he might learn there are lots of sunny folks in this ‘hood. and thus, find a neighbor who’d be happy to share a 12″ pizza pie.
My wife and I were pleasantly surprised when we stopped in for dinner last week. Pizza was fresh and delicious, staff was friendly and the desserts were to die for. So glad to see another viable business open on the Hill!
We got takeout a few days ago. It was pretty good, better than average, but not stupendous. Pizza crust was just what we’ve been missing here in Richmond, although pie was slightly overcooked. Tomato sauce on the margarita pizza and pasta was fresh and tasty, although on the pasta it could have benefited from some basil, garlic and/or onion. Not sure if cheese on pizza was truly “fresh” mozzarella, the kind that comes in a ball and is stored in a water brine. For $15, the chicken in the chicken parm was plentiful, but a bit on the dry side. It was more of a whole breast and not a pounded cutlet. For the price, it would have been nice to have a small salad included. Overall, we’d go back, but probably just for the pizza.
The pizza is tasty…nice crust & sauce! Doing a fine job.
Eric Huffstutler: Unfortunately, even if they were serving 6″ pizzas, while doing cartwheels and singing “O Sole Mio” for you, you would surely find something to bitch about. You must be one very unhappy man…
Since most of the previous commenters here were also the critics of Buff’s sad pizza offerings, I am more than excited to swing in soon. I’m glad to see the consensus is that the pizza is good. As always, making good food in the restaurant business is paramount. See you soon, AOTH.
Anthony’s brings continued improvement and another option for Church Hill residents. Coffee shops, restaurants, and small business owners in general in a neighborhood demonstrate vitality of a community.
Owner is INCREDIBLE. Makes great food (my favorite meatballs ever), but just as importantly, insists on service that is above and beyond every single time. I hope this place is here to stay, because it has become my favorite Italian restaurant in the Richmond area, and one of my overall favorites of all time!
sat nite takeout: eggplant parm (perfectly cooked: crispy) and ravioli (decadent). marinara sauce is great. bread, awesome. nice selection of va-beers. mmm.
okay, after all this raving I decided to go in. I concur that the service was wonderful. The pizza was good bordering on just okay. But the pasta was severely lacking. It was certainly not a $13 pasta plate. I had chicken parmesan and it was just eh. The sauce was nothing special. I’ve probably had Olive Garden sauce that I liked better.
Not sure I agree with all the over the top raves about this place.
If I am going to spend $13 for a plate of pasta, I’m going to Edo or MamaZu’s.
Pat and I were the first to be served beer when their license went through. We were pleased back then, and still are supporters of Anthony’s. Great food performed with a passion to do it right are a great combination. Michael and his gang are worth our support to see one of the good guys make it!
